I have a book that shows how to build nest boxes.  Neil and I are following its directions -- one 2x6 gives us a nest box  -- and have three houses done and two more cut out.  They are designed so that one side pivots open for cleaning.  That's good.  We don't want any mites wintering over.  We used rough cut cedar so we won't have to paint or ( Read more... )

I spent yesterday morning in contented mode cleaning house and doing a couple of loads of laundry.  After lunch I ran errands in town  - ran into my friend Sallee at the Post Office and at Safeway - (there is only one grocery store in town so I guess it wasn't that odd) .  I spent the afternoon reading an Anne McCaffrey book from the library; Black ( Read more... )

So much nicer than cold and snowy.  For several days there my house didn't get above the low sixties even with the wood stove.  I dressed in layers and stayed warm so it was okay but I prefer a warmer house.

Well, it's been fun but now I'm ready for warmer weather.  It was 18 degrees when I got back home from the warming shelter this morning.

It snowed quite prettily for a couple of hours yesterday morning depositing an inch or so of snow on the ground.  Later, it warmed up enough to melt most of it.  I have to say it wasn't nearly as big a deal as the weather forecasters thought it was going to be.  Now comes the cold part.  This morning it's 26 degrees.  So nice to have a wood stove ( Read more... )

The Weather Watch began at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon.  In the morning I picked-up and cleaned and polished.  I covered the garden and filled the wood box.  The power often goes out when it snows.  When that happens, I don't have water so I caught up on laundry except for washing Neil's bedding.  I discovered I was low on laundry detergent so I ( Read more... )

It's going to snow tomorrow and Thursday and Friday.  Then it's going to clear off and get cold.  We knew it was coming.  Neil left yesterday to beat the snow back to his house.  Tomorrow morning I'll put the tarps over my winter garden.  Snow isn't cold enough to hurt the garden but  it kind of flattens it.  After it stops snowing, the temperature ( Read more... )

Neil and I went to the Asian Festival in Eugene on Saturday.  It's in the expo halls at the fairgrounds so it's all undercover.  There is an art gallery, demonstrations of dance, martial arts, taiko drumming, bonsai, music, etc. a food court and many, many vendors.  We had a wonderful time wandering around and drinking it all in.
