Holy crap, Mike Portnoy has left Dream Theater.

Evidently he needed a break from the band, the rest of the guys didn't want to take a break, so Mike--rather than holding them back--decided to resign so all concerned could do as they willed.

Obviously not his first choice for an outcome, but it's good that he's big enough to say "I'm not going to let my needing a break hold the rest of you back."

In the various interviews I've read about his side-projects, he always talks about how his "home" is Dream Theater, so it's kind of surprising to see him leave.

Ah crap. This does suck, but I wonder what sorts of interesting things it'll lead to.

I've enjoyed a lot of his side-projects, so I'm sure he'll have no lack of things to keep him busy. Ditto with the other guys in DT: I expect they'll all cope.
