I get the impression your family judge having a partner/house/job as something of a status symbol. I think there's far more to getting the most out of life than that (and I'd also be thinking pretty hard about whether it's in my best interest to attend christmas dinner).

Hey Kat

I know we don't know each other that well, but you can always come and spend xmas with my family - there will be a kitten! (and watch me being made fun of by MY family :P )

And I sometimes think that for families, nothing is ever good enough. I showed my grandmother my completed thesis last week and the only thing she said was "oh and in the time it took you to write that, your cousin had 2 babies! I guess you're the career woman of the family."

So because I got a higher degree and didn't get knocked up, I'm the bad granddaughter lol. Families suck :P

Also, I am getting a third cat (kitten) tomorrow so we can be crazy cat ladies together :)

I'd be inclined to say something to her such as: "Well, some people are capable of something other than just plopping out babies and contributing to the over-population and subsequent destruction of the planet."

I think that you've got to define what you want out of life and live up to your own goals, not letting other people define you.

But it sucks when your family don't seem to think that criticism is encouragement.

However, at least you're never lonely if you have cats :).
