I'm no longer willing to simply settle for the standard electric stove with four coil burners and a clock.

I hate to say it, but this does not come as a surprise to me. :)

In case you haven't had the "pleasure" of cooking on one, glass top stoves SUCK. They really aren't any easier to clean and are slower to change temp.

what she said - and you may use neither cast iron nor do hot sugar work on glass tops (and woe if the pan slips from your grip) Any chance for GAS - that instantly responding easy to see if on or of medium?

Not a chance in ... my house. Besides not having the proper "plumbing" laid in for it in the kitchen, gas makes me nauseous so there is no way I will willing buy a stove that uses it.

I haven't, but I will soon. I'll keep your advice in mind about the slow temperature change, though. Easier to clean didn't enter into the equation, really.
