superficial discourse about fears

Apr 30, 2007 17:04

I recently responded to a question about fears. I have some. Some are serious, and for some reason, I didn't go into them very deeply. Some are less-so, although they're awful in my head ( Read more... )

birds. at least you're not afraid of birds for no real reason.

also - sometimes, the possibility of success is scary.

...probably the only time you'll ever hear me say "good thing you aren't coming over anytime soon."

OMG. I know those spiders you are talking about. Once I came home to my mom's house late at night and one was on the kitchen floor and I thought it was some sort of gag, before I saw it move. I began chucking a sneaker at it from across the room. I had to hit it about 6 times before it died. eeeeee!!!

I have an irrational fear of what Nick calls "hoppy kriketz", i.e. spider crickets or camel back crickets. If you look closely at them they look like giant spiders, and if you try to step on them they will JUMP AT YOU and hit you, and are damn impossible to kill. I used to live in the basement of this big house and there were hoppy kriketz from chernobyl in there. there was one in the bathroom in my apt the other day, and i screamed so loud i'm sure my neighbors thought i had been raped or something. :0

YES, they look like horrible fake spiders until they move. UGGH, I hate them. And I completely agree about the hoppy kriketz... much too cute a name for the detestable things they really are, by the way. They were all over the basement of a house where my mom and I lived alone and I wouldn't go down there. Sometimes they'd make it up into the main part of the house and my cat would dismember them... I remember finding many hoppy kriket legs lying around during my childhood. Not so many legless bodies, though, now that I think about it... heh... hmm ( ... )

i'm not really up on spiders, but i'm not sure anything common in virginia gets larger than the Garden Spider / Writer Spider?

note that size measurements are for the body, not the legs+body together.

I am not looking at those links because I am almost certain the articles will contain accompanying pictures. As for whatever you thought wasn't found in VA, the spiders I'm talking about ARE found in VA... I found them. In VA. Uggh, I'm sure sometime this summer you'll see one. Usually they're smaller (still big, though), but those two were exceptional.

I've seen the spiders she speaks of, and I've seen plenty of garden spiders, and these things are probably more than twice the size, and meatier. Those garden spiders are mostly legs. They look exactly like brown recluses, but more the size of a small tarantula with skinny legs.
