Prologue :: Chapter 1a :: Chapter 1b :: Chapter 2 :: Chapter 3 :: Chapter 4 :: Chapter 5 :: Chapter 6

It took Soohyun four days to stop lecturing Kevin on not talking to Kibum. Alexander had to intervene a bit because anyone could see Kevin was getting slightly bitter.

“I don’t get it. He’s been so nice, Soohyun-hyung’s nice too, so why will a nice person dislike another nice person?” Kevin pouted sadly, being highly-supervised whenever he’s taking orders from Kibum in those four days.

Kibum smiled restrainedly due to that, and just said a quick word of thanks followed by the usual nickname whenever his coffee arrived.

Kevin knows he should just get on with life. His career doesn’t just end because he can’t talk to one customer, but he still can’t get over Soohyun’s unreasonable dislike for Kibum.

“I know, I don’t get it either, but Soohyun always has a reason.” Alexander patted Kevin sympathetically.

Kevin still didn’t look too cheerful.

“Come on, smile for me!” Alexander grinned widely, sighing when Kevin gave him a tiny one to be polite. “You miss talking to him so much?”

Kevin blushed bright red, shaking his head furiously. “N-No! I just…feel suffocated being banned from talking…”

“To him.” Alexander added with a cheeky smile. “Tell you what. I’ll distract Soohyun for a bit, so you can go catch up on old times with him.”

“What old times? We-” Kevin quickly tried to protest, but Alexander already pushed him in the direction.

“Fighting!” Alexander laughed evilly, running off probably to distract Soohyun as he said.

“That old man is constantly having something up his sleeves.” Kiseop shook his head, smiling encouragingly at Kevin. “But if the customer can make you happy, go for it.”

“He-”

“Go~!” Kiseop sung, cutting in before Kevin could argue otherwise.

Kevin blushed embarrassedly, nodding while hanging his head low, walking to Kibum as if guiltily.

-

“Good morning!” Kevin tried saying it a little cheerfully, smile faltering when Kibum only bowed a little.

“The usual, thanks.” Kibum said distractedly, typing a little vigourously. Kevin wondered if that meant “back off”. As an afterthought, though, Kibum added. “Kev.”

“Huh?” Kevin instinctively replied, but the older only chuckled with a shake of his head.

“Thanks, Kev.” Kibum repeated, smiling when Kevin made an “O” shape with his mouth while nodding in understanding.

Kevin turned his head and saw that Soohyun was nowhere in sight. This is a good time to apologise about the past four days-

“You have another question for me?” Kibum asked gently, saving his work before sitting back against his chair, waiting expectantly for Kevin’s reply.

“Uh…” Kevin didn’t really have one, but he didn’t want have to just walk off because he didn’t have one. “Why do you drink only double shot espresso?”

“I like it bitter.” Kibum smiled, bringing his coffee cup up to his mouth and taking a sip.

“Oh, it’s bitter?” Kevin asked, eyes blinking at Kibum’s reply.

“Yep, the most bitter thing.” Kibum laughed at Kevin’s face, who had a frown etched deeply on his forehead at the mention of bitter. “You like sweet things, I can tell. Funny that you decided to work in a café.”

“Must you like bitter things if you work in a café?” Kevin asked sincerely, at which Kibum couldn’t help but chuckle at.

“I guess not. All right, shall not hold up any more of your time. Talk to you another time.” Kibum smiled and sat forward, hands typing quickly again.

Kevin turned back to the counter and noticed Soohyun looking at him unfocusedly. Maybe he just stepped out, maybe that’s why Kibum cut their conversation short.

Whatever, they talked.

Trotting back to the counter, Kevin told Eli of the order since he was now working as a barista. “Oh, and is double shot espresso the most bitter thing?”

“No. I think bitter gourd is the most bitter thing.” Eli replied with a straight face while completing Kibum’s order.

“I mean, in this café?” Kevin tried again, and broke into a smile when Eli started cracking up. “Hey! You were joking with me!”

“Ahaha, I haven’t had a good laugh in days!” Eli stuck out his tongue childishly. “Thanks! Uh yeah, espresso is technically the most bitter kind of all coffee since it’s from the beans. The others have things like milk and all, which lessens the bitter taste. Especially flavoured coffee, since all the flavourings take away most of the bitterness.”

“Oh.” Kevin nodded, pondering about it for a moment. “So, should I try it?”

“You don’t drink coffee, do you?” Eli raised a curious eyebrow and saw Kevin shake his head. “Then no, you shouldn’t. It might make you gag or something. Try flavoured ones first?”

“Mm, maybe. Not today though.” Kevin smiled, thoughts still present in his mind as he went on to serve customers. Due to him being immersed in his own thoughts, Eli had to get Dongho to serve Kibum’s order instead.

“Bitter enough to make one gag…why does he still drink it?” Kevin asked himself, wondering if there was any story behind that, or if it was just personal preference. As if an idea suddenly struck him, he exclaimed loudly. “Oh!”

Everyone turned to him curiously, to which he awkwardly laughed off. Thinking quick, he pointed at a dirty table. “I forgot to clean the table over there.”

Dongho threw Kevin a cloth.

Kevin sheepishly cleared the table while wiping it clean, thinking about the idea that struck him. Kibum rejected cakes and muffins before too, stating he didn’t have a sweet tooth. Quite the contrary to him, Kevin added mentally, who loves cakes and muffins like honey to bees.

Did Kevin just found out one of his personal preference? Kevin giggled to himself, feeling accomplished somehow. As if he had just intruded into Kibum’s personal life a little, and that it wouldn’t be long before he fully invites himself in.

Unbeknownst to him, a writer chuckled, instantly typing out what just happened.
