Chapter 11: In which his birthday turns out bad...

“Ne, Sho-chan!” Aiba singsonged and wrapped his arms around the manager’s neck from behind.
The first time he called him Sho-chan, the man was literally shocked. None ever called him at such a girly nickname yet Aiba managed to say it on such an adorable way that he couldn’t help but accept and like it. And last but not least his heart felt warm at the thought that finally he was able to graduate from ‘chipmunk-face’ to ‘Sho-chan’.
“Hmm…?” Sho ‘asked’ back but continued his work on his lap-top despite Aiba clinging on his neck.
Aiba peeked at the screen and frowned. ‘Is my schedule more interesting than me myself?’ he thought with a pout when he saw Sho was busy adjusting his stage play’s practices with his other jobs for next month.
“Ne, Sho-chan!” Aiba started again determined to win Sho’s attention over that stupid schedule. “Do you know what day today is?” he asked nuzzling into the older man’s nape.
“Today?” Sho asked back again looking up and stopped his typing - Aiba smiled triumphantly at this. “It’s Wednesday, isn’t it?” he said after some thinking and turned his attention back to his work.
Aiba pouted again annoyed.
“That’s not important! What day today is?” Aiba repeated the question on a whiny voice and pouted some more.
Sho chuckled and getting free from Aiba’s hug he stood up and turned to face him.
“Don’t pout, your lips will remain like that” he teased touching the pouting lips with his fingers lightly. “I know, it’s your birthday today, right?” he asked smiling gently at the younger man.
Aiba’s eyes lit up happily and a beaming smile bloomed on his face. Sho was the happiest when he could see that smile on Aiba’s face.
“You knew it!” he chirped happily.
Sho couldn’t help but laugh again.
“Of course, I knew! I’m your manager. I need to know when your birthday is” Sho said mater-of-factly.
Aiba’s smile faded a bit hearing this. Did Sho know it only because he was his manager?... He quickly swallowed to push back these disturbing thoughts. He tried so hard to trust Sho, to believe his love was true and not just another trick to tame him into an obedient idol.
“So, where’s my present?” he asked forcing himself a little to sound bratty and greedy and to hide the wavering in his voice.
“Hmm… I’ll take you out after work and you can ask anything you want. Also we can have dinner at some nice place… How does that sounds?” he asked seemingly improvising.
Aiba thought a bit than shrugged smiling.
“Okay. But you really have no imagination!” he said smirking.
Sho looked offended than glanced at his watch.
“Your vocal practice with Imai-san is about to start in a few minutes. You should hurry there instead of bullying me. Or I might just change my mind about giving anything to you!” Sho said.
“Are you trying to blackmail me?” Aiba protested.
“No. I’m trying to save you from getting into trouble for being late” Sho started. “So hurry!” he repeated pressing a kiss onto Aiba’s forehead.
“Okay but don’t you dare changing your mind then!” he warned the manager before skipped out his office cheerfully…

As the door was closed behind Aiba Sho chuckled satisfied. Everything went just as he planned, he thought as he pulled out a small jeweler box from his pocket and looking at its content he smiled softly. ‘I hope he’ll like it…’
Suddenly someone was knocking on the door.
“Hai!” Sho said and quickly hid the small box back into his pocket as he turned toward the door.
“Hi, Sho-kun! Are you finished with fixing Aiba-chan’s schedule for next month?” Tackey asked smiling.
“Oh, I’m almost finished. I’ll take it to you as soon as it’s complete” Sho replied smiling back. “Can I help you with something else?” he asked when the other man didn’t show any signs of wanting to leave.
“Hmm… I just bumped into Aiba-chan earlier at Tsubasa-kun’s practice and… he looked cheerful… Also, in the past month none complained about him, instead everyone says how nice he is and how easy is to work with him now” Tackey said seemed to be awfully confused.
Sho looked a bit worried and bit his lip. Was Aiba changing that obviously? And if he did, why was it causing suspicions? It made no sense at all... He cleared his throat.
“But doesn’t that what you wanted in the first place?” he asked innocently hoping he can ease somehow Tackey’s suspicions.
“Yeah, that’s true…” Tackey said and nodded slowly. “I guess I didn’t actually believe it can happen and it’s just too much of a change suddenly. I have to use to he’s not complaining about anything and everything” the older man added at the end laughing.
Sho forced out a laugh himself too. ‘That was close…’
“Anou… if you don’t mind, sempai… I should go back to my work…” Sho said politely.
“Oh, yeah. I should do the same too instead of chatting here like some school-girl. Don’t forget to send me the schedule!” he said before bid goodbye and left.
Sho sighed deeply and collapsed into his chair ‘What the hell is this? Even Aiba being happy is rousing suspicions? This is sick…’ Sho though shaking his head then with another sigh he returned to his work…

“Just let me change my clothes then we can go…” Sho said smiling at Aiba as he let them in his apartment.
“Okay” Aiba nodded and plopped down to Sho’s couch immediately reaching for the remote control - Sho had this animal channel where a lot of funny shows were so Aiba didn't mind at all if he had to wait a little - and turned on the TV.
“Do you have something in mind what do you want?” Sho shouted from the bedroom but Aiba was too absorbed in his TV show that he just hummed something - though that might have been because of the show too.
Sho couldn’t help but chuckle at this. Aiba was such a child at times, not the spoiled brat he usually acted but a child who can be enchanted with the smallest things. His smile just grew wider when he heard the younger man laughing freely at something he saw on TV.
“Okay, I’m ready, we can…” Sho said stepping out the bedroom but before he could finish his sentence the doorbell rang. “Who can it be?” Sho muttered frowning. He wasn’t waiting anyone - since Aiba was there already - and he barely had any visitors at all.
Even Aiba turned his glance from the TV and looked at the older man questioning. At the end Sho shrugged and went to open the door - closing the living room’s door securely so whoever was at the doorstep could spot the young idol inside. A few minutes later he returned with an envelope in his hand what a delivery man just brought. Aiba kneeled on the couch - forgotten about the show on the TV since the mysterious letter was more interesting at the moment - and eyed Sho curiously.
“What’s that, Sho-chan?” he asked.
“Dunno…” the older man mumbled eyeing the sender’s name then opened the letter and started to read. “Oh, dear God…!” he gasped and his eyes lit up happily.
“What is it?” Aiba whined again but this time he didn’t wait for Sho to answer but took the paper from him to read it himself:
‘Dear Sakurai Sho-san,
We gladly inform you that your applying to our company was accepted. We’re looking forward for you working to us from the beginning of the next economical year as a…’
Aiba stopped reading at this point.
“What’s this bullshit?” Aiba asked jumping up from the couch. “What job were you applying? You have a job! You’re my manager, aren’t you?” the boy yelled as he felt the cold of betrayal sipping into his heart.
“No, it’s… Not… like that… I… after I kissed you… I thought it’d be better… and it was always my dream to work at this place…” Sho started desperately trying to explain it to Aiba but somehow he didn’t find the proper words. Not that Aiba wanted to hear it. It was obvious that he’s refusing to listen to any kind of explanation.
“I knew it! You were just lying as well! In the end you too just care about yourself only and betrayed me just as everyone else! I hate you! Go for your stupid dream and don’t come anywhere near me!” Aiba yelled and before Sho could stop him he ran out of the apartment…

Sho quickly grabbed himself and rushed after Aiba but the younger man was in a much better shape thanks to all that dancing and was already nowhere to be seen when Sho got out of his apartment building.
“Oh… where are you…?” Sho muttered panting as he turned around again and again looking for that familiar lanky figure in the crowd but - of course - found nothing. “Please, tell me you went home…” Sho prayed silently as he rushed back to his apartment for his car keys to go to Aiba’s place.
In the late afternoon traffic it took more than an hour to get there. And if that wouldn’t be enough, it seemed an eternity to Sho till the elevator reached Aiba’s floor. But in the end neither his knocking nor ringing the doorbell had any answer. After some hesitation he pulled out the spare key that Tackey gave him not long after he was assigned as Aiba’s manager. He never used it so far cause believed that Aiba had the right for a little privacy and also has the right to decide whether he wants or not seeing him.
“But it’s an emergency now…” Sho tried to convince himself. “I need to know if he’s here and safe…” and with this he quickly opened the apartment…
But it was completely silent and empty…
Now Sho started to panic. ‘Where can he be then?’ He had to realize that he knows nothing about Aiba. He didn’t have the slightest clue where he used to go when he was upset or sad; he had no idea what’s in the boy’s head… And he didn’t know either who could he ask for help without causing even more trouble to them than what they were in already?
“What did I do?...” Sho clutched his hair tugging it in despair. “I should’ve been the one who protects him from getting hurt then… What should I do?... Ninomiya! I’m sure he knows where Aiba used to go…”
The manager tugged his phone from his jacket’s pocket but another small object fell out too. Sho froze as he looked at the little box. Aiba’s birthday present… Probably he’ll never be able to give it to him… Shaking his head he picked it up quickly then dialed Nino’s number.
“What do you want?” Nino barked into the phone.
“Ninomiya-san… Sakurai desu… Anou… is Aiba-san there with you by any chance?” he asked first praying that the answer would be yes.
“No” Nino ruined his hoped with his short answer. “Why would he? I thought he’s with you today… Since it’s his birthday, you know… Something happened?”
“Eh… it’s… I can’t find him anywhere. I thought he might have gone to you” Sho said leaving out the unnecessary details.
“Well, he doesn’t… If he’s…” Nino started but a beeping sound interrupted him. “Wait! I’ve got another call…” he said and put the manager on waiting.
Sho tapped his foot impatiently. He really hoped that Nino didn’t want to socialize just now with whoever the other caller was. He didn’t have the time for that… but just as Sho reached this point in his thoughts a click sounded and Nino was back.
“Well, it was a pleasure to chat with you, Sakurai manager-san but I have to go now” Nino said.
“Wait but what about…” Sho said panicked that he won’t get the needed information.
“Oh, you don’t have to worry about Aiba-chan, I take care of that…” Nino said then hung up before Sho could say anything else…
