Chapter 3:

A few days - and another endless, boring meeting with his uncle - later Nino escaped to the roof trying to forget or at least sort out what to do with the old man’s newest order…
‘Take responsibility…’
Closing his eyes he tipped his head back to the wall behind his back. As always, the first thing popped into his mind was his face. A soft sigh escaped his lips.
“Long day, Nino-kun?”
Nino’s eyes snapped open at the voice.
“Oh-chan…” he breathed out obviously surprised. “You scared me…”
“Sorry. Long time no see…” Ohno smiled at the boy and of course this made Nino’s heart skip several beats.
Not finding his voice, Nino just nodded at the statement.
“You skipped all the dance practices. Did I make you that angry?” Ohno asked looking sad about the possibility of that.
“No!” Nino cried out and shook his head feverishly. “It’s just… complicated… I had a lot… to think…” he admitted half of the truth.
A relieved smile appeared on the dance instructor’s face after hearing this.
“Glad to know that… Care to share what were you thinking about? Maybe an old man like me can help you…” Ohno said joking.
“Don’t say that! You’re not old, Oh-chan!” Nino protested on his behalf.
“Thanks, Nino-kun!” Ohno laughed feeling touched by Nino’s reaction though their ten-years age gap did make him an old man compared to the schoolboy in front of him. But he didn’t voice out his opinion anymore just waited silently whether the boy speaks up or not…
Nino sighed again. Why does it have to be Ohno who wants to help? One more sigh. And he can’t pour all his problems onto him either. What should he tell him then? Or should he just tell nothing?...
“Okay. So there’s this guy, he’s super nice and cool and… I kinda… like him…” Nino admitted so far staring at his knees but now with blushing face he stole a glance from the dancer standing above him to see he was watching him intently, waiting for him to continue. “But…” Nino continued after suppressing another sigh. “Here’s this stupid misunderstanding and… I just don’t know how to… clear it up…” he finished turning his glance back to his knees as if there was something really interesting to see…
Ohno hummed softly above Nino’s head but the boy just had no clue what that should mean.
“Love situation, huh?” Ohno mumbled and it was hard to decide that he was amused or disappointed by Nino’s news.
For a while there was silence between them. Ohno studied the boy’s face - as much as he could see since Nino was still lowering his head - but it was more than obvious that he was really troubled over this misunderstanding, whatever that was exactly. Ohno couldn’t help but pout over this discovery and if wouldn’t know better he’d swear he felt jealousy bubbling in his heart against this mysterious, super nice and cool guy… But… that was impossible, right? Right? He can’t fall for his pupil, right?...
The dance instructor cleared his throat.
“Maybe… maybe you should just tell him the truth…” he said finally shrugging. “If he’s as nice as you said, I’m sure he’ll understand”
“Yo…you’re sure?...” Nino asked back doubtfully.
“Yeah, sure…” Ohno repeated but still didn’t sound as confident as he thought he should be, also he avoided looking at Nino in the eye too long.
“Maybe you’re right… After all, an old man like you must know…” Nino tried joking to ease the obviously tense atmosphere around them.
“Oi, earlier you said I’m not old!” Ohno protested but Nino noticed the smile in the corner of his lips.
“That’s right, I just did” Nino agreed immediately then stood up facing the older man.
“What is it, Nino-kun?” Ohno asked when the boy stepped to him with seriously glinting eyes.
“Oh-chan… No… Sat…” Nino started but just then Ohno’s phone started ringing cutting the boy’s words.
“Gomen…” Ohno smiled at the younger boy sheepishly and stepped aside to answer the call.
“Gomen, Jun-kun, I forgot it… No, I’ll be there… Hai…” Ohno said quickly before hang up. “Gomen, Nino-kun, I have to go now… Oh, almost forgot why I was looking for you… Promise you’ll come on Friday, the usual place, okay? Promise me!” he asked looking at Nino sternly.
“On Friday? Why…?” Nino wanted to ask when Ohno’s phone beeped once again making the dance instructor to frown frustrated.
“Yeah, Friday. Just promise me, okay? We can finish this then as well…” Ohno said quickly. “3 o’clock. Don’t be late!” he added over his shoulder while he headed to the door.
Nino just stared after him not having the slightest clue what the Hell it was! He only knew that he wanted to confess but as he should’ve known, he was left high and dry… He felt like crying…

Three days later Nino was walking toward the dance hall - as slow as he could - still when he arrived to the said door he had 20 more minutes till 3 PM.
“What am I doing here?” he mumbled to the door though the answer was obvious to him. Ohno asked him so there he was no way he won’t come… That’s how weak he was against the older man…
Holding back a sigh he opened the door and walked into the dance hall. At least dozen of juniors were in there already, staring at Nino curiously. Nino forced a smile on his face then sprinted to a corner far from them to sit down and wait for Ohno hoping he’ll explain whatever he wanted from him this time. He felt the ‘other’ juniors - those who were there already when he came and those who arrived after him - eyeing him non-stop till 3 o’clock came.
Just in time Ohno walked in followed by Aiba right behind him. The dance instructor smiled happily when he spotted Nino in the corner. Aiba who noticed the boy too gasped surprised.
“Nino-chan! What are you doing here?” the soon-to-be idol asked rather loudly.
“You two know each other?” Ohno asked looking at Aiba surprised.
Nino stared at the gaping boy and shook his head violently trying to remind him to his promise.
“Uh… yeah… dorm roommates…?” Aiba stuttered. “It’s just… Nino-chan… felt sick in the morning… Thought he won’t come…?” the boy bubbled uncertainly.
Nino buried his face into his palm. That was the lamest lie he heard in his entire life… Yet it seem to work cause Ohno just nodded while he looked at Nino with hints of worry in his eyes before drop the topic and walked up to the front.
“So as you all know, in six weeks Aiba-kun’s debut concert will come. He’ll need background dancers for that. That’s why we’re here today to choose 15 of you for that task…” Ohno said.
“What?” Nino squeaked but started coughing quickly to cover up when everyone shot suspicious glances to him. “Sorry…” he chocked out.
Ohno watched Nino for a few second before spoke up again.
“So, you all know the choreography so let’s check out how you can work together with Aiba-kun…” Ohno finished with the instructions.
Aiba put on a beaming smile.
“Yoroshiku!” he said and despite the smile on his lips, his eyes that was fixed on Nino were filled with worry and slight confusion over the fact he had no idea what was the other boy doing among his potential background dancers?
Ohno walked to the stereo to turn on the music. As he passed Nino he looked at the boy with a bright smile.
“Good luck, Nino-kun! I know you can do it!” he whispered to him believing the boy needs encouragement to have confidence in his dancing skills.
‘What?’ Nino thought panicked then realization hit him. ‘He thinks I’m a junior and like this he thinks he’ll help me closer to my dream… No, no, no! This can’t happen! I’ll be boosted if I got chosen… Ninomiya, think! You have to find out something!’
His inner monologue was cut when music blasted from the speakers. He knew the song. This was what they practiced with Ohno all the time. As much as he wanted to escape, as soon as he heard the familiar melody, his body took over and followed the choreography without the slightest mistake. And what made it worse, he caught the proud look in Ohno’s eyes when he looked at him and he enjoyed it! He enjoyed that he could make Ohno proud…
‘Ninomiya, focus! Think! You can’t be chosen! They’ll tell him the truth… You can’t let him know it like this! He’ll hate you…’
‘He’ll hate you…’
When Nino’s thoughts reached this point he felt panic flooding his heart, his eyes widened and…
Everything happened too fast.
“Ah…!”
Nino felt loosing the ground under his foot; he wanted to hold out his hand to blunt the fall…
The next thing Nino felt the sharp pain in his head and hand…
“Nino-chan!”
“Nino-kun!”
Nino heard the voices calling him but all he could do sobbing in pain and curling up in a ball as if that’d save him from any further pain. Aiba and Ohno rushed to the hurt boy while all the other juniors stood around them shocked and frozen.
“Nino-chan! Where does it hurt?” Aiba asked reaching his hand but not daring to touch the other boy.
Ohno kneeled at Nino’s head gently lifting it on his lap moved him to turn on his back.
“Okada-kun! Find a manager or someone and tell them to call the ambulance ASAP! The others can leave. Auditions are cancelled for today!” he ordered looking p at the juniors before turning his attention back to the injured boy. “Aiba-chan, get me towel!” he asked the soon-to-be idol mentioning the supplies on the table in the corner.
Nino heard the running footsteps around him but it sounded from way too far.
“Oh-chan, here…” Aiba handed the towel to the dance instructor.
“Ohno-san! The ambulance is on the way!” Okada came back running to announce it.
“Thanks, Okada-kun” Ohno said but didn’t turn his attention from Nino. “Aiba-chan, you go too! You still have rehearsals later, don’t you?”
“But… Nino-chan…?”
“He’ll be okay, don’t worry… I’ll wait for the ambulance with him. It must be here soon…” Ohno said reassuring while he gently wiped off the blood trickling down on the boy’s temple.
The sound of Aiba’s faltering footsteps died soon.
Ohno’s long fingers caressed Nino’s sweaty face gently.
“You hear me, Nino-kun? It’ll be alright. Everything will be alright…” he said reassuring.
“Oh-chan… I… hurts... Satoshi… Satoshi…” Nino mumbled his thoughts hazy from pain so he didn’t realize he was calling the older man by his given name.
Ohno felt his heart skipping a beat at this. But then he quickly shook his head. There was no time for that. Not now. Sadly…
“It’s okay, Kazu… I’m here with you… Stay with me, d’you hear me?”

“Sensei! How is he? Ninomiya-kun?” Ohno asked the doctor impatiently.
“You brought him in?” the doctor asked eyeing the impatient dance instructor from head to toe and continued just when Ohno nodded his head as an answer to his question. “We took care of his injuries. The hit on his head was nothing major but he would suffer from headaches during the next few days. Therefore we want to keep him here under monitoring. But I’m more worried about Ninomiya-kun’s arm…”
Ohno felt panic bubbling up in his heart hearing this.
“What happened with him?”
The doctor looked at him annoyed for the interruption but Ohno couldn’t care less about manners at the moment. He had to know what’s with Nino. He needed to know…
“As I wanted to say before your interruption he broke his left wrist badly. We put a cast on him but it will take at least two months or more to heal but can’t guarantee it’ll be the same… I’m sorry…”
“Can I… see him…?” Ohno asked or rather chocked out.
The doctor nodded at him rather sympatheticly at now.
“Sure. He’s in room 617. But don’t make your visit too long. Ninomiya-kun needs to sleep and rest”
“Wakarimashita!” for the first time since that horrible accident happened an almost real smile appeared on Ohno’s lips when he got the permission to visit the injured boy.
Nodding and thanking to the doctor quickly, the dance instructor rushed toward the said room to see Nino…
Almost tearing up the sliding door to the room, Ohno stumbled in.
“Nino-kun!...” he cried out the boy’s name. “Oh, Kazu…” he whispered slightly disappointed when he saw the pale figure sleeping soundly in the bed.
Slightly pouting but silently, Ohno pulled a chair to Nino’s bedside and took the boy’s uninjured hand in his, caressing his skin gently. He can skip a few more hours of work…
