Chapter 8: It’s hard loving you…

For days Masaki felt - and acted - like he was walking on cloud nine. He was high on his love for Sho and the knowledge that his brother loved him back.
But these completely peaceful, lovey-dovey days didn’t last long. One evening they got the speech from Shuntaro-san how they have to get good results - in his interpretations it meant to be their class’ top - on the final exams of the semester cause it’s their duty as the member’s of the Sakurai-family… And this pressure stressed out and almost wrecked Masaki…

“I don’t get it! It makes no sense at all!” the boy cried out loudly dropping his head on the pile of opened books on his desk.
Homework was difficult and he could not call Nino for help - he had a date with Ohno-kun today… ‘So don’t you dare call me or I’ll kill you for it!’ -; but mostly… he missed Sho badly…
“Tadaima, Masaki!” Sho greeted entering the younger boy’s room. “What’s wrong, baby? You’re not feeling okay?” he asked worried and walking to him, put his hand on his shoulder gently. “Masaki, baby, talk to me, please!”
Masaki shot up in his chair at his touch - startling his brother with it - and wrapped his arms around Sho’s waist, burying his face in his shirt. He mumbled something into the fabric that the older boy couldn’t understand.
“What’s wrong? I don’t understand if you’re talking to my abs…” Sho said; he was worried for his beloved but he couldn’t help finding this scene highly amusing and endearing in the same time.
“Help me, Sho! I don’t get it! I’ll fail on the exam and Shuntaro-san will be mad at me!” the boy whined cutely but desperately; his puppy eyes filled with tears.
“It’s okay, baby. Don’t freak out, I’ll help you” Sho said gently and bent down to kiss the boy’s forehead. “I get something to drink then I’ll be back in a minute, ‘kay?”

Just a few minutes passed but Masaki felt he couldn’t wait anymore. He rushed down the stairs and ran straight to the kitchen where his brother was pouring a glass of iced tea for himself.
“Masaki!” Sho gasped surprised when the younger boy’s arms wormed around his waist and his warm breath fanned his nape. “Hey, what’s up with you?” he asked chuckling a bit - though he was secretly concerned - as he reached for a sponge to wipe up the tea that he spilled thanks to Masaki’s ‘attack’.
“Nothing…” he mumbled into his neck, his eyes closed. “Just missed you…” he added silently, inhaling his brother’s scent deeply as if he’d tried to make sure by this that Sho was really there with him.
Again Sho chuckled and patted Masaki’s hand lovingly.
“I missed you too…” he whispered back.
Sho pried off the younger’s arms from his waist to be able to turn around and face him - though those slim arms immediately found their way back there when they were face to face.
“You’re awfully cuddly today. You sure nothing happened at school? You know you can tell me anything…” Sho asked searching the other’s face. If he knows that anyone hurt him in anyway… well, they’ll be as good as dead…
But Masaki shook his head silently, his puppy eyes fixed on his brother.
“Just… missed you, it’s all… You always stayed back to study with Ohno-kun recently…” he mumbled sadly. “Kiss me?” he asked on a pitiful, whimpering voice.
Once more, Sho couldn’t help but chuckle. His boy was just too adorable! He cradled his face in his palms and barely brushed his lips to Masaki’s when they heard the front door opening and hurried footsteps lumbered down the hallway. In an instant, Sho froze and pushed away the younger boy just in the same moment his father appeared at the doorway.
“Father! What are you doing at home?” Sho asked surprised but on the outside he kept him indifferent image and didn’t look at his father or even Masaki next to him.
“I came home for some papers…” the man said eyeing the boys rather suspiciously.
“I have to study…” the younger boy mumbled barely audible before he fled, not bearing the awkward air in the kitchen…

“What was this, Sho?” his father asked on a demanding tone.
“What was what?” Sho asked back on a flip tone, slowly turning his uninterested gaze at his father.
“With Masaki-kun… I know what I saw. You know that I won’t tolerate any kind of… deformity in my house! He’s you’re brother now!” Shuntaro-san hissed sternly and squint his eyes at his son.
“Leave me alone, father! That brat had a bad day. He needed a hug. Isn’t that what family is for?” Sho snapped impatiently, practically denying what his father was hinting and somewhere in the back of his mind he knew he was betraying Masaki with this… This thought made him angry and feel sick in the stomach.
“Sho, I told you to heaps of times to watch your attitude!” his father scolded him strictly. “Now, go, study you too! You have exams, don’t you?”
Sho stared at his father angrily for treating him like a little kid but he still stomped past him to upstairs…
He went straight to Masaki’s room to keep his promise and help him out with his homework but when he wanted to enter after knocking shortly, he found the door locked. He frowned.
“Masaki?” he called for the younger boy knocking again. “Open up, it’s me!”
“I’m studying. Leave me alone!” the short and unusually harsh answer came from inside. This made Sho frown more.
“Hey, baby… What’s…?”
“I said leave me alone!” Masaki practically shrieked behind the doo end his words were followed by a loud thudding noise - telling he probably threw a book or something at the door.
Sho held back a sigh and retreated to his own room defeated. If only he’d known what was going on in Masaki’s mind…

After three days of exams, the school year ended but neither of the Sakurai-boys could enjoy this fact fully. Sho was frustrated cause Masaki kept his cold treatment ever since and he just had no idea why?! But he wouldn’t be Sakurai Sho if he leaves it like that! From now on they’ll be together for the two weeks of spring break and no matter what it takes, he’ll win his Masaki back!...
On the other hand, the younger boy did his best to distract his mind from Sho cause his heart broke a little more every time when he remembered how Sho pushed him away… But to his luck, he had a Nino to help him - though he said nothing about what exactly happened between him and Sho. The shorter student was determined to make Jun confess the truth before the break but it still took a lot of efforts from them cause their friend always managed to slip from their hands somehow…

When the final bell rang all students jumped from their seats cheering happily. Jun was the first who finished throwing his stuff in his bag.
“Jya, see you, guys, later!” he said and sped for the door.
Or more likely he wanted to…
“Oi, oi, not so fast, princess!” Nino cried after him while Masaki grabbed his arm and pulled him back to push him into his seat again.
“What? And don't call me that, brat!” Jun barked annoyed.
“Don’t you have something to tell us?” Nino started his interrogation - back-upped by his taller friend’s eager nodding - as the classroom slowly emptied.
“No idea what you’re talking about, Ninomiya… Last time I checked, you weren’t my mother. Fortunately!” Jun snapped at him. “Now if you excuse me, I have some appointment to attend…”
“Matsujun’s always so busy recently” Masaki whined and shot his watery, puppy-eyed expression at him. “Don’t you like us anymore?” he asked; his lips pouting, voice wavering.
Nino almost started clapping. This boy was sensational and his acting outstanding as well! His teary, puppy eyes and wavering voice were really low weapons cause there’s no such stone hearts that wouldn’t be melted by them in an instant. And he didn’t even need to tell him to do it…
“Look, what did you do? What kind of friend you think you are?” Nino said to add to Jun’s guilty feelings and pulled Masaki in his embrace and caressed his hair gently. “It’s okay, don’t mind him, Ma-chan! Kazu will always be your friend…”
Jun swallowed thickly. He knew Nino well enough; he knew he had his hidden intentions behind his bratty act. But Masaki… He was too pure and innocent…
“I’m sorry, Ma-chan! Of course I still like you. We’re still friends! I didn’t mean to neglect you just… I met someone…”
Nino held back his grin and nudged Masaki to be careful too.
“Who? Do I know them? Why didn’t you introduce them to us?” the tall boy asked with wide, innocent looking eyes.
“We just started dating…” Jun protested weakly and blushed.
“But who?” the two other students asked in union.
“It’s I…” Jun blushed more. “Ikuta… Toma…” he mumbled under his breath.
“Yay!”
The boys burst out in a victorious cry which caused Jun to jump from his seat and stared at his friends confused.
“What?”
“We knew about you long ago. We saw you two together, holding hands and all. Just wanted to hear it from you…” Nino explained grinning. “But you know, I have to credit you for your choice. The son of the principal… Sasuga our Jun-kun, ne?” he said looking at Masaki.
“Yeah!” the taller student grinned back brightly.
Jun stared more at the prankster couple mortified. He couldn’t believe he fell for their little trick. And Masaski of all people!?...
“If you’re finished with your little game… I have someone who’s waiting for me…” Jun said on an offended tone and accompanied by his friends’ laughter, he left the classroom…
“Come on, we should go too if we don’t want to be locked up here for the break” Nino said getting up once he could get his mood under control again.
“Un” Masaki nodded, still smiling brightly and followed his best friend…

“Kazu!”
Once they were out the school gate, the cry for Nino sounded. The shorter boy’s face lit up with a delighted expression and ran to jump into his boyfriend’s open, inviting arms.
“Oh-chan! Missed you!” he singsonged with his arms wrapped around the older student’s neck.
“Me too!”
Masaki smiled affectionately as always when he saw the couple PDA and turned away to give them some privacy but then his eyes fell on his brother who stood a few steps away from his classmate; cool and collected as always. For a second, hurt expression clouded his face. Why couldn’t Sho greet him like that? Just once…
“Jya, Nino-chan, I’m going home. I’ll call you later. Bye-bye, Ohno-kun!” he waved goodbye to the couple with a somewhat forced smile and before his friends could’ve pry their lips off of each other to say goodbye as well, he headed home; passing next to Sho without acknowledging him with as much as a glance.
Sho felt his patience nearing its end at this scene. Without saying bye to his friends, he stomped after the younger boy…

“Masaki!” he called after him loudly on an imperious tone but the boy didn’t react till he grabbed his elbow and yanked him into stopping.
“What now?” the boy asked impatiently and tried to shake off his brother’s grip cause he was afraid he won’t last long before he breaks down crying in front of Sho and he didn’t want that.
“That’s what I wanted to ask too! You’re acting weird for days. Why?” Sho asked back on a similar tone.
“Oh, so now that none we knew is around, you want to talk to me? Well, I don’t!” he cried. He knew he was acting childish but he couldn’t change his hurt feelings just like that.
“What are you talking about?” Sho asked confused.
“Are you that ashamed of me? Am I that much of a bother to you? Then why did you kiss me in the first place? I just don’t get you at all…” Masaki hiccupped and to his greatest horror, he felt hot tears flowing down his cheeks.
Sho’s eyes widened at this. Suddenly he did felt ashamed of himself. He noticed nothing of his beloved Masaki’s insecurity that was caused by his own careless acts. Even if there were reasons behind them…
Through his tears, Masaki saw his brother’s shocked, gaping face which told him Sho never bothered to think about his feelings before. And it broke his heart more. He made another attempt to yank his arm free.
“Let me go…” he whimpered weakly. “Just leave me alone…”
These words brought Sho back to his senses.
“No!” he denied sternly. “I’m not letting you go. Not now, not ever! I’m not ashamed of you, not the least of all but you have to understand certain things” Sho said seriously and put his other hand on Masaki’s shoulder to make the boy face him and pulled him a little closer. “Father took you in. You and I are wearing the same name. Society would never understand or accept our relationship. Not now at least… And father wouldn’t either. He’s the most frigid, thick-headed bastard you can imagine…”
Masaki’s tears slowly dried up as he stared at his brother. He seemed and sounded so hurt and torn as he talked!
“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, Masaki!” Sho said and not caring that they stood in the middle of the street, people passing next to them, he pulled him into his arms, holding him tightly as if he’d really never let him go again and he wished he could just do so. “I love you, baby. Please never doubt that…” he whispered into his ear.
The younger boy sniffed slightly. He wanted, needed to believe in him. Otherwise he had no idea what else remained for him…
“I-I’m sorry too…” Masaki mumbled into his brother’s shoulder. “It’s just… I love you too, so much…” he added blushing and new tears rolled down his cheeks as he was clinging onto the older boy’s school blazer.
Sho tightened his arms more, almost crushing the younger boy but he didn’t complain. Not when he was just at the place where he wanted to be the most…
