“Ah, come on.” Miyavi pouted. “Not my boa’s”

OK, first off we were trying to save HIS realm.  He could give up a few do-dads but not a bunch of feathers? There’s definitely something wrong with this picture.

Secondly, and most important to my mind, he was nowhere near as cute when he pouted as Uruha was.  So he could just save that face for someone it’d work on.

Glancing back at Reita, I saw that he wasn’t impressed by the pout either. Grinning at him, I shook my head.

“Nope, we like these.  So these are going.  Say goodbye.” Reita informed the other man.  I made the feather things look to be waving.  Reita, glancing back to see why Miyavi was looking at me like I was crazy, started laughing. Well, it’s nice to see I’m not the only one around here with a sense of humor.  I was beginning to wonder if it was something they all gave up when they started traveling around the countryside.

With a huff, Miyavi turned back to his wall, which now stood open. Hurrying to catch up with him, I came to a stop just inside. Wow, he had a lot of stuff.

“Have you ever seen so much crap in one place?” Reita almost whispered in my ear.

He chuckled at my jump of surprise and gave me a little push, trying to get me to go farther into the room.  I turned to glare at him.

“Don’t sneak up on people.  It could get you into trouble.” Which earned me yet another grin, as he moved past me.

All right, that answered one of my earlier questions. He was definitely different than Aoi and Uruha.

Aoi had a different kind of humor. And Uruha may be cheerful, but this guy is straight out playful.

And not in a safe, clean way. I had to be careful.  I could really start to like him.

Miyavi was moving thru the room, picking things up and setting most of them back down.  I started looking around too. Reita already had several things in his hands, hoping Miyavi would give the OK to use them.  I had to keep reminding myself that whatever Kai used, Miyavi would hopefully never see again. That made me put most of the stuff I had picked up back down.

Reita approached Miyavi, holding his hands out to show what he’d selected.  Miyavi looked them over and, except for one or two things, stuck them in his pocket. I showed him the few things I’d picked up. He made a strange face, nodded to himself and shoved them all into the same pocket.

“How many do you think we need?”

“I’m not really sure.  I remember seeing quite a few wearing bells.”

“You know, it’s really too bad Kai can’t magic those bells from a distance.” I said.

Reita shot me a look.

Miyavi gave a short squeal.”Why can’t he?” he asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe he can” Reita said, still giving me that look. I kinda liked it.  It made me feel like I was smart.  Of course, if I were really smart I would’ve thought of it before we left our little hideaway.

So we took what we had and headed back.  Hoping it was enough, or that Kai could actually cast something over those bells.

Upon arriving, we discovered Aoi and Uruha were already back.  Kai was setting things up.  Miyavi went over to him and asked. “Is there any way for you to cast this spell-thing from a distance?”

“How far?” The wizard countered.

“Well, Ruki was wondering if maybe you could just be-spell the blasted bells and be done with them.” Reita chimed in.

“That’s not a bad idea.” Aoi said, looking my way.  Oh good, I’ve managed to look intelligent to him, too.  My day was getting better and better.

Kai was still pondering this, though.  So maybe it wouldn’t work.

“I suppose I could make it some kind of blanket spell, covering the whole castle.  But then any bells within the castle walls will be affected by it.”

“OK, but what about the lesser ones then? The ones not wearing bells.  We want to make sure they leave and never come back, too.” Miyavi stated, using what I assumed to be his ruler-voice. It was funny, hearing that tone coming from the strange man.  It somehow didn’t fit.

“What about the feathers?” I asked holding them up hopefully. “There are a lot of them.  Possibly even enough for every one of those things out there.  That’d double the spell on the belled ones, too.”

Uruha beamed at me.  Kai nodded.  Miyavi pouted at the loss of his boas.

Reita walked back over to where I was standing, throwing an arm across my shoulders.  “You’re pretty smart.  How’d you end up traveling with these knuckleheads?”

I quickly looked back at the others, seeing if either felt insulted.

Uruha was still grinning.  Nope, not him.

But what about Aoi?

Cautiously I moved my eyes over to where he stood.

He was scowling.

I wasn’t really surprised.

Especially when a moment later he started laughing.

“If I remember correctly, you’ve traveled with us ‘knuckleheads’ on more than one occasion.” And he pounced, knocking Reita to the ground. Soon they were wrestling on the floor, Uruha giggling like mad.

“Could you guys start separating those feathers?” Kai interrupted. “I’ll start with them.  And after I’ve given them the homesickness one, I’d like to zap them with another.  Something to make those things want to keep the feathers with them at all times. That should really stop them from coming back.”

Miyavi looked slightly happier at that.  I’m thinking that the loss of his feather boas was starting to look less painful to him.  Kai was doing everything he could to return his realm to what it had been.

After separating the many strands, getting bits of feathers everywhere, we stepped away from the table.  Leaving Kai plenty of room to do his thing. First, he smoothed them out, so that he could see most of them fully. Then he arranged his mixed concoction in a circle on the table around them. Next, he dripped candle wax over the circle, muttering his spell the whole time.  A faint glow crept from the orb atop the staff in his hand.  It swirled around, settling within the circle.

The wizard took a deep breath as the glow slowly seeped into the feathers. Not even sparing us a glance, he turned back to what he had prepared and repeated the circle.  This time with his other creation.  When he finished that, he took a powder from one of the pouches at his waist and liberally sprinkled the fine substance over the feathers.  His mouth was moving the whole time, but again, I couldn’t hear his words. When he was satisfied he’d used enough he stopped.  Rapping his staff on the floor three times, he uttered what I took to be the final words of the second spell. There was a bright flash of light centered in the circle.  When I could see the feathers again, they weren’t just glowing.  Now they also sparkled.  Like they had been covered in the dust of gems.

Finally he looked at us.

“Well, that’s that. It’d probably be best to put them where they can be found before I set the one on the bells.”

“I dunno” Uruha hedged “are you gonna set it from here, or from outside.”

“Well, I thought I’d do it from inside.  But I’ll need two of you to make the circles outside the castle for me.  And someone’ll have to let me know when the circles are finished.”

“How about if you set it from a different room? Maybe one upstairs, with a window?” Miyavi asked.

“Well, I suppose I could do that.”

So Kai gathered his things, handing one container to Aoi, the other to Reita. And candles. Yeah, they got nominated.  I was going to watch from the window, while Miyavi and Uruha kept a lookout for any surprises.  We didn’t want anything to come in before we were ready.

Miyavi led the way to the room he had in mind, me following the wizard, and Uruha bringing up the rear. I was a little sad to see Aoi and Reita leave the group, but it had to be done.  Aoi stole a quick kiss before leaving.  And I found myself blushing again, Reita having caught my eye, smirk firmly fixed on his lips.

Damn. I was getting tired of all this blushing. Maybe I should do something about it.
