Back from mechanic. He agrees that it is most likely the catalytic converter (but which one? It appears there are 2!). Also, big oil leak, which is probably caused by the back pressure buildup of said converter. Started the day early with chores. Three boxes to the post office before it closed, ran the Christmas decorations to the shed, and now I'm sitting in the laundromat doing the mid-winter blanket wash and eating tacos.
