I was walking to campus on Alder this afternoon (which is a semi-residential street) when a man yelled at me. Typically what occurs is one or several honks, and by chance I had been reflecting on that topic earlier. It is a startling experience and serves to jolt one out of one's private thoughts. It is disruptive and rude, but not particularly ( Read more... )

I think that "you ugly" is a sign of resignation if it is anything. Regardless of the impossibility of discourse, I think you got your point across loud and clear: I'm a human being, and you will be held accountable for what you say to me. Who knows, you may have changed his behavior permanently.

Nah, his tone was not one of resignation, but almost the same high level of aggression. Also, he gave me the impression that he came from a poor neighborhood (grammar, his car). Though he could have been posing, generally the women from those areas are damn tough and what I said would have been exactly their reaction or tamer. So I figure he's used to it, though he probably didn't expect it from such a cute figure as me. (The men I saw that day for some reason went out of their way to make sure I knew they noticed me. However, they were fine because they were all polite about it.)

Ah, rocks. How delightfully handy they are.

This coming off of my reading the 27-page pdf file for Gender Studies (best surprise ever: 3 pages of endnotes) all in the space of a couple of hours. Don't you love it when certain themes keep rearing their heads (more than usual) and connecting?

I always remember wanting to shave my head in Spain and then realize that a lot of people get that here, too (I mean, I do on occasion, but not as frequently as most, I don't think). Interesting to compare different reactions to different people (and the famous individuals calling out "Hey, red boy!" when I biked past in my CY jacket. I'm sorry, but anyone who mistakes me for a guy is fucking blind. I wish it weren't the case, but it is).

I'm impressed with the FU. The toughest I've ever gotten was "WE DON'T LIKE THAT."

Yes, the connection thing is getting pretty intense here. No matter how much I say, "No, I care about condoms and sex education!", my life says back, "No, you care about the environment more!" For instance, today I am applying for a job at a non-profit called Earth Economics, which basically tries to show that conservation helps, not hinders, the economy. And my biology professor's primary interest is conservation. And Vox's big spring event will be possibly expanding The Sustainability Connection to a two-day regional conference. And my roommate keeps leaving the lights on when she leaves the room, and one of these days I'm going to yell, "Turn off the damn lights!"

I am starting my letter to you today.
