Just outside Ft. Leavenworth, and in the shadow of Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary, is a preserve for American bison. They were pretty far away, and they were lying down, but it was still neat since it was my first time seeing any live. Previously I'd seen a stuffed one at the Buffalo Museum in Buffalo, NY, and a metal sculpture in Aspen, CO.

My Uncle Chris works at Ft. Leavenworth, and he took Dave and me on a tour of the post. For me the most interesting thing was putting the place in historical context. For instance, this is the place where travelers on the Oregon Trail pulled their wagons up the hill after crossing the Missouri River. You can see how the earth has been shaped ( Read more... ) -

On May 15th, my Aunt Jeanne graduated with her Masters from Kansas State University. Dave and I flew out for the weekend. It was nice to see my family out there, and I finally got to meet my cousin Matt's daughter Rachel. Obviously, the party was Luau-themed.

Here are the finished products: sachets with lily-of-the-valley soap shavings inside. I'm quite pleased with them. One of them was a hostess gift, the other has no recipient yet.

Look! Tiny pillows! They don't look like much, but they are the first actual project I have done using my early-1960s-built Singer Featherweight sewing machine, which was originally owned by my great-grandmother. These pillows are actually part of something else, but I can't say what yet.

Printing it out just to take a picture of it would have been a waste of paper, especially since it's 22 pages long.
Now, brief sigh of relief before buckling down to convert it into 15-minute presentation form.

I walked about 2.5 miles at lunchtime today, from my office to Subway and back. On the way, there's a tiny park, basically a patch of grass with two benches, a trash can, and a few bushes. It's next to a little pond, though, which has ducks! I sat to eat and watched them for a bit.
