So, I've been thinking of stuff I want to do for these "whatever you fancy" ones, and the first of them that I'm gonna do is this:
Well, we have Torchwood (well, had, because I won't be watching an Americanised version with even more focus on Gwen bloody Cooper, thankyou very much) and the Sarah Jane Adventures, one of which was awesome once upon a time, and the other of which possibly still is awesome, but I can't say cos I'm not caught up yet. And yeah, probably two good spinoffs at a time is more than you'd expect any fandom to be lucky enough to get (and no, I'm not acknowledging the new K-9 one), but still - when I look at DW and see all that potential - awesome characters we see once and never meet again, fascinating scenarios that we only get to spend time in for 45 minutes or, if we're lucky, an hour and a half - well, I've been making a list in my head. This is how it goes so far (and yes, this is spoilery for the first 4.5 seasons, plus a bit for SJA):
More Doctor Who Spinoffs I Would Love To See
Rose Tyler, Defender of the Earth
Exactly what it says on the tin. Rose, after saying goodbye to the Doctor at Daligulvstranden, takes up the mission to defend her parallel Earth from alien invasion, with the support of that world's Torchwood, rebuilt and led by Pete Tyler. Okay, so it would pretty much go off the rails when Cloen shows up, cos any version of the Doctor tends to be show-stealing, even a half-human one with a single life, and DT wouldn't come back for it anyway, but you could have gotten a good two seasons out of it at least.
Sparrow and Nightingale Investigate
She's a clever, curious investigator, who the Doctor once relied on to save his and Martha's lives. He's an obsessive, internet-savvy puzzle-solver, haunted by his sister's disappearance at the hands of the Weeping Angels. They run a bookshop together, and solve weird alien mysteries on the side. You know it would be awesome.
Bowie
The tragic saga of the doomed Martian colonists at Bowie Base One. "Tragic", obviously, because we already know it ends on the day a Time Lord shows up at their base and they all die. Or, well, a few of them don't, but that's not the point. Adelaide/Ed OTP, btw. Cos they are like Janeway/Chakotay, only SO. MUCH. BETTER.
The Smith and Jones Chronicles
Martha and Mickey travel the universe, looking for evil alien butt to kick. That is pretty much all we need from this.
The Maria Jackson Letters
Okay, yeah, so this is really an SJA spinoff, not a DW one, but I want to see it anyway.
Maria investigates alien activity in New York, and writes back to Sarah Jane about it - the first episode is called "Dear Sarah Jane", and sets the framing device for the show thereafter, each ep opening and closing with Maria's narration.
The Queer And Inexplicable Adventures of Alonso Frame
After the crash of the Titanic, no one wants to hire the helmsman of a jinxed ship. Alonso wanders the universe looking for work, but something of the Doctor's odd brand of luck has rubbed off onto him, and he keeps finding himself in all the most interesting kinds of trouble. This sometimes crosses over with the Smith and Jones Chronicles, and occasionally Jack shows up to help out. Also, that second word in the title? True in both senses - the trouble he runs into is always quite strange, and there is plenty of gay.
