Disney World

Oct 10, 2007 10:14

We spent four days in Disney World this past weekend.  I don't think I've ever walked so much in my life.  According to Joey's dad's pedometer, we walked over 25 miles.   This was our first trip without a stroller and the kids did great.  Not a single complaint or meltdown.  Amazing.

I, on the other hand, ended up with a huge crack in my heel.  I ( Read more... )

The kids loved it. I think that's why I love it so much. I just love watching them have fun. I also love that it's still magical for Nick and Molly. Sam loves the rides, but he isn't as into the characters as he once was. I miss the days when seeing Mickey Mouse made him jump for joy.

i love nick's "smiling for the camera" smile. it's like he's making his mouth as wide as humanly possible.

also, holy crap look at how crowded that place is.

It was sooooooooo crowded.

When we went in 2001 there were no crowds because it was so soon after 9/11. A lot of people weren't comfortable traveling at that point.

In 2005 it was crowded, but not 'bump into people just trying to walk down the road' crowded.

This time it was jam packed. We had to wait 50 minutes to ride the Peter Pan ride. We always go the same weekend, so it isn't like that changed. In fact, I was looking at pics from the last two trips and the shots in front of the 'monuments' like the castle have very few people in view behind us. In the new pics it's just a sea of people behind us or the kids. It takes away from the picture.

Next time we are going on an off-weekend in November or February.

Also...for school pictures the photographer tried so hard to get Nick to smile naturally and not do his cheese smile.

She told me that Lifetouch (who does all the pics around here) no longer allows their photographers to say funny things to get the kids to relax and smile/laugh in a natural way. She used to say stuff like 'say stinky feet!' and the young kids would laugh/smile. Apparently stinky feet is now off limits.

What the hell is happening to us that photographers can't be stupid on school picture day???

dude. i hate what we're becoming.

we're a society that throws out "freedom of speech" as one of our best assets, but we're doing everything to rob ourselves of speech entirely.

I love that Sam got up and kissed the step-sister's hand. That's so awesome. Also, I can't believe how much alike your kids look.

A couple of my best friends worked at Disney for a few years, and ohhhhh the stories I've heard. I don't want to ruin the Disney experience for everyone, but you may want to think about getting Sam a tetanus shot... and a rabies shot for good measure.

I've heard stories, too.

Sam's up to date on his shots.

Disney recruits a lot of college-aged kids to work the park. Kids from all over the world, actually. They like to have 'Germany' in Epcot staffed by Germans.

Oh, and all Disney employees are called cast members.

So anyway, these young people live on the Disney World compound (which is gigantic- only something like 1/4 of it is being used for parks and resorts) in dorms. I am sure there are a bunch of locals who work for Disney, too, who don't live in the dorms, but the dorms are a big 'perk' since you don't have to find housing.

It's one big party/sex-fest.

I kind of wish I'd known about this program when I was younger. Not because of the drinking and sex (although being able to say that I fucked Donald Duck would be a great story) but because it would be a cool experience.

When we ate at the Biergarten, our host and waitress were German. What's cool about Disney is that each 'cast member' has a name tag with their name and hometown and country on it. I actually struck up a conversation with a guy from Ithaca who worked Expedition Everest.

Biergarten was pretty darn good, by the way. I got to have some red cabbage, which is one of my favorite foods. And the cheesecake was just like the cheesecake I had in Germany, which isn't really like American cheesecake at all.

Joey loved the beer.
