Sushi in Davis?

Ok, I'm not the world's biggest sushi fan. I can eat it, but I generally won't pay for it. I realize that makes me an oddity, both in the tech field and amongst my peer group - so I'm putting a shout out here for Davisites ( Read more... )

Zen Toro. Hands down the best sushi I've ever had in Davis. It's also pretty modern, so there are a lot of off-beat (read: western style) sushies. Their garlic role is fantastic, stay away from the Palate On Fire- that's the dish that finally ended my search for Hottest Food In Davis a few years ago. My mouth still tasted like burning after a 2 hour class, and I was able to pinpoint the little hellion's exact location in my digestive tract for the entire duration. I haven't brought up the gumption to eat it again, and it's been almost two years.

oh...and splitting that palate on fire with you (and by splitting, I mean eating 2 pieces) was entertaining. I agree....HOT!

I was sad when Zen Toro closed their downtown Sac restaurant and moved to Davis. The owner is a cousin of a friend of mine.

They really do sushi well.

For future dining forays, you can always check YELP.com for opinions.

check with Major and Spychef, but I think they lean toward the one in the Mansions.
And the name slips my mind.

Ah. Zen Toro.
There is also Osaka Sushi, but that may be a bit pricier, don't know how fast.

Both got good reviews at (albeit 2006) reviews on Davis wiki. Call to find out how early they open for lunch.

Zen Toro is good. Though I'm not a fan of many of the more modern concoctions because they're usually too rich for my taste.

I'm also a fan of Moshi Moshi across from the Office Max shopping center in south Davis.

Putah Creek probably has the freshest fish. Of course, you have to catch it yourself, but if you're really in the mood for raw fish...

Hey, this is hard enough as it is. At least I've learned that enough pickeled ginger and wasabi will cover almost anything.

Osaka, or Jusco. Jusco is a smaller establishment, but I think it gets looked over a lot.
