The phrase "mirror stage" comes up in the book Sungjong is reading, and his eye snags on it and pulls it down to his mouth, making him repeat it to himself under his breath. He looks it up: It's a psychoanalytic theory of child development that focuses on the period where children begin to recognize themselves in mirrors. Children are fascinated with mirrors, he reads, because it turns the child into an object to be observed. The next time Sungjong washes his face before bed he pauses and examines his reflection. His bangs are pulled back, exposing the whole rectangle of his face, from hairline to chin. "I already have a little brother," says Sungjong, but he smiles and bows at the rookie group anyway. He remembers what it was like.
When he comes up, his gaze lingers on Sungjae's face, the eye level exactly at his own. Their similarity gives him an uneasy feeling - it's like there's a slight lag in his recognition. It's not quite what he's used to seeing in the mirror, and yet not different enough to calm him. Sungjae's eyes meet his and Sungjong sees the way his smile sticks a bit at the edges, too.
Sungjong already has a little brother, but he and Sunkyu don't even look related. That was what family friends would always say. The women would pat Sungjong's cheek and say, Ah, what a pretty boy, before Sunkyu was old enough to sulk and sometimes after. The tips of their acrylic nails scratched his face a little, but never hard enough to leave a mark. Such smooth skin, they would say ( ... )
