The handwriting is a little large and somewhat loopy.]Hi everybody! It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintances. Name’s Serenity ( Read more... )

'anti-grav engines'?

And the food is good - there's a lot of different kinds to try!

Oh, and it's nice to meet you too, Serenity! I'm Daitou.

Yeah, anti-grav engines to make them float. If it were a rocket it'd make more noise.

It's nice to meet you too, Daitou. You been here long?

I guess that'd make sense. [No, he's still lost. But some things just aren't worth trying to puzzle out around here.]

Not too long - almost two weeks, now.

So we're both just newborn babes, then! Have you got a job yet?

I'm Simon.

Thank you kindly. Pleased to meet you, Simon.

Although, it's kind of funny to say that when I ain't actually met you. Don't seem quite proper.

It does seem strange at first, but you do get used to it fairly quickly.

I do still prefer face-to-face meetings myself, but this way of communicating has its own charm.

It surely makes you wonder what the person on the other end looks and sounds like. Though I bet you can tell some about a person by their handwriting.

Hello, Serenity. Are you among the newborns as well? Pleased to make your acquaintances! The cause of the islands' floatation is unknown, but the overall technology level here do not seem to include something as sophisticated.

The abundance of food is normal. We even have a farm here! You cannot get any fresher than that.

Sure am. I was born yesterday. If the islands ain't floating with an anti-grav engine, I might think it was something like a big magnetic system. But that might frazzle some electronics. There are electronics here, right?

A farm? They got animals, too?

We have some electronics here. A bit outdated if I may say so, but most people is not bothered. People seem to come from all sorts of places with different technologies and ways of living. But you know, I never really checked if they have a magnetic system!

Yes! Other than those in the farm, some are in shelters, where they can be adopted for pets. There are also some in the stables, but I never really get a good look at those.

Be careful of animals in the upper floors though. They're [A pause.] large.

We can keep pets here? I wanna go see.

Exactly how large are we talking about, now?

[A few pen taps before the writing appears.]

Welcome to Edensphere, Serenity; my name is Fred.

I see your questions have been answered, to the extent that they can be, but I confess myself curious--does the presence of fresh food astonish you so much?

If you have any further questions about the workings of this place, [pause] I am certain everyone will be happy to answer what they can.

Hey Fred, thanks for the welcome.

I guess it does. Maybe there weren't much food where I come from? It was just surprising, is all.

In that case, one must wonder what you ate--some kind of preserved food, perhaps?

But since there is no way to know, at least for now, I suppose I should leave off the questioning. I hope you have an easy time of settling into Edensphere.

Maybe, but I don't think it tasted near as good as what I've eaten here.

Thanks, Fred. There's plenty I still stand to learn, seems like.

It's nice to meet you Serenity. I'm Inara, and I run the Serenity Spa over on Wellspring Island. Perhaps we can meet sometime, if you'd like a tour.
