38 videos

My favorite video this year (of my own):
A three-way tie. This is a really hard category to chose an outright winner.

Seven Nation Army (Jurassic Park 1 and 2)
Whenever I consider re-watching Jurrasic Park (which happens quite frequently) it is always the thought of Jeff Goldblum strutting around as Ian Malcolm that sways my opinion. "Jurassic Park" is one of my all-time favourite films and I LOVE THIS VIDEO!! There I said it, I love one of my own videos. This video was all for me and I am so proud to have completed it.

Word Up (Back to the Future Trilogy)
I love this trilogy. Love, love, love. This video was so much fun to make and I really loved working with the subject material.

I Gotta Feeling (AFL St Kilda Saints)
I learnt a lot about sports editing this year. I made four St Kilda highlights packages and the improvement from "Snakeskin" to "Stop the World" was tremendous. Though my annual interview with the St Kilda Football Club media department was disappointing, I learned some invaulable lessons about pacing, light/dark contrasts and song choice when it comes to editing with sport (from a professional who holds my dream job). After the interview I applied these principles to St Kilda videos that were purely for my own (and my Mum's) enjoyment. "I Gotta Feeling" was the first and my favourite of the two AFL videos that I made in the latter half of the year. This is the only area of editing where I feel I am rapidly improving and gaining recognition and I am so excited that I love the videos that I am making in this field.

My least favorite video this year:
Girls and Boys (Go)
I really hate this video. I love this movie and the song choice but everything feels disjointed and off. It has that "slapped together in one day" vibe which really pisses me off because I planned and spent a lot of time working on it. Ah well, I still love this movie and I don't think anybody saw this video anyway.

My best video this year:
New Slang (Breaking Bad)
I adore Jesse Pinkman. I started planning this video immediately after I finished watching the third season. Poor Jesse. I had a very specific idea in my head and I feel it actually lived up somewhat to my expectations. The musicality needs some work and the movement is unbelievably beat-driven but I still like how it turned out. Despite the glowing pride, I was given the third season for Christmas and would love to remaster this video using shiny DVD rips. That AMC logo REALLY pisses me off.

My worst video this year:
We R Who We R (Grosse Pointe)
This was a tough call. I adore this show but this video is awful. I despise the song, the colouring was bowing to YouTube pressure of what makes a successful video and the editing is bland. I don't mind it but I could've done better and that's what makes not like it.

Video most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Nothing Ever Changes (Twin Peaks)
I was so proud of this video...and it got no love. I understand the source material isn't entirely well-known, but I still felt it deserved some attention (which it really didn't).

Most fun video:
URA Fever (Dana Ashbrook)
I LOVE THIS VIDEO. The subject material and the fact that this video turned out exactly how I imagined. The colouring, the song choice...everything is so perfect! And the best part is that this video was so much fun to make! I love all the sexy. Early 90's sexy sexy.

Tied for second: Word Up and Seven Nation Army

Hardest video to make:
Word Up (Back to the Future Trilogy)
The comparisons, the overlays...I had a lot of self-placed expectations because of the amount of love I have for the source material. Let's just say that working with that on my shoulders was unbelievably difficult. I do like the outcome though, so I'm glad all the time and effort paid off.

Most unintentionally telling video:
Last year I had to deal with a lot of shit, and as a result, most of the videos I made in 2010 represent a form of escapism. I love how vidding can take you out of your world and place you in the thick of another. And with that introduction...

I Just Wanna Live (BTVS)
This is a remake of one of the first videos I ever made. The idea of reworking an idea that I had developed while I was completely inexperienced excited me. This video is completely cut-driven and pretty much sucks....but I made it during a time where I didn't feel excited by anything, and it means a lot to me that Buffy once again helped me deal with my life. This show has been a constant throughout my teen years and this video represents 2010, my favourite all-time show and vidding stripped down to it's core. I know that sounds impossible because this video sucks- but it means more to me now than I ever thought it would or could.

Most successful video:
Tough call.

Howl (Angel)
This video has received some incredibly flattering feedback and therefore I feel it is my most successful. Angel/Darla are criminally under appreciated in the Buffyverse fandom and I really wanted to explore that throughout this video. It's certainlynot my best work but I love that people showed support for this video and the couple.

Biggest vid FAIL:
Elevation (Twin Peaks)
The ending. WTF. So much hatred.

Most Kick Ass Moment:
Seven Nation Army at 1:29-1:33. Jeff Goldbum vs T-Rex = EPIC MONTAGE.

Single Sexiest Moment:
Dana Ashbrook with the cigarette at 0:27 in URA Fever. I hate smoking but damn. That man is something.

Vidding in 2010:
I'm not really sure what I think about this year. I wanted it to be a year of making videos I'd always wanted to make and never bowing to peoples expectations of what fandoms are popular and viddable...and I think I accomplished that to a certain extent. I still want to make videos that people remember and I feel like I'm getting closer. Although I think I made an improvement, I still feel that there is this massive gap between myself and the rest of the vidding world. This year I had patches of semi-decent editing...hopefully next year those patches will be closer together.

Vidding in 2011:
I have been using Sony Vegas since 2006 and definitely feel I need to move on. I have gotten everything out of the program that I possibly can and would love to shift over to Adobe Premiere Pro. I also need to get better. Musicality, movement and appreciation for the source material are all things I need to work on. I'd also like to start storyboarding and take more time with special editing projects. I am one year away from graduating and pursuing a career in editing (probably sports editing to begin with) and yet I always feel so inadequate in this community. I want to be better (I know I say that every year) and I think 2011 might be the year when I break the barrier and actually make a video that means something.

Vidding Projects in the Works Right Now:
I have been sitting on a Betty Draper video idea since early October and can't wait to get started on that. I haven't been a fan of her character in the last few seasons, but I have the perfect song and storyline for this video and CAN'T WAIT. As I said above, I am planning on experimenting with Adobe Premiere and I'd love to make this video on a new program. I also have a few Twin Peaks ideas, one involving the recent Psych/Twin Peaks reunion. I am also getting ready to make a Community video soon.
