Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4Chapter 5
Mao thought about how Aiba used to take her out for movies so often. It was always fun watching movies with him because he would come up with crazy speculations about what was going to happen in the movie and he would mix up all the characters so she would have a crazy laugh about it after that.
But going to the movies with Jun was different. Maybe she loved sitting in his car. Maybe it was the comfort of his car seat, or was it that he allowed her to treat his shoulder as her pillow each time she decided to fall asleep during the journey? Mao wondered whether her presence made him lose his concentration while driving, with her breath moistening his skin, and his hands on hers.
Movies with Jun had a sweet feeling to it. Be it at the cinema, or at her apartment, whenever she watched movies with him, she could cuddle up to him and he would cuddle her back. It was a very comfortable feeling. The snacks that he conjured up for their movie nights were also irresistible. Why did they taste so good?
Perhaps the most memorable movie experience she had was when she lost to Jun at janken and Jun had taken her to the scariest horror movie that ever existed. Mao was always bad with horror movies and chickened out each time. She tried to drag Jun out of his idea, but it wasn’t any use. Before she knew it, she was already in her seat with Jun next to her, munching on his bag of popcorn.
Jun didn’t want to make Mao feel distressed or anything, but he loved horror movies! It was a treat for his DoS soul and he loved seeing gruesome scary scenes. However, he had never anticipated her reaction.
When an image of the dead person who came alive in the scariest manner appeared on the large screen, Jun felt someone crushing the frame of his body hard. He turned around and actually thought that the dead person from the movie fell out of the cinema screen! He saw Mao hugging his body so tight that he almost couldn’t breathe. She was trembling and was trying hard not to look at the screen. Still hugging Jun as tight as she could, she let out a scream full of fear when the sound effects took place. He placed his arms around her and held her tight, a gesture to assure her that everything was going to be okay.
Mao didn’t budge for the next 10 minutes and only hugged him tighter every second. Jun turned to look at her and kissed her forehead before talking in a soft voice.
“Let’s go back.”
A trembling Mao only nodded her head, still not moving from her position.
Jun got up, his hands still around Mao’s body. He used his other hand to press her onto his shoulders, shielding her from the image on the large screen as they walked down the steps towards the exit.
She was still shivering on the way to the car. Seeing that, Jun wondered whether that movie was that scary. It wasn’t for him.
As he expected, Mao clung on to him as he drove her back to her apartment.
Mao was so afraid, so much that she couldn’t say a word to Jun. She didn’t want him to see her wimpy face when she was forced to watch a scary scene but it seems like that couldn’t be helped that night. She tried to think of something to say as she was in his prince-like arms, carrying her as if she had shrunk into a baby. But she couldn’t think of anything. Instead, she could only gaze upwards at Jun’s serious face while her hands automatically wrapped themselves around the neck belonging to the person who was cradling her. She knew that behind that serious face was a heart that cared so much for her.
Jun stood at the edge of her bed after he had laid her gently on the bed. Mao wondered if he was waiting for her to say something. He was staring hard at her after not saying anything to her since he pulled her out of the cinema hall halfway through the movie.
Mao stuttered. “Jun, so..rr..”
“You get scared pretty easily, huh?” Jun started to tease her before she had managed to finish her sentence. Mao swore she saw him laughing at her, breaking his piercing stare.
“So what if I do?!” Mao was embarrassed already.
Jun only continued to laugh at her.
Mao frowned and pouted. Why did Jun like to tease her like this...
He came closer to her and stroked her head.
“Nothing is wrong with being scared. I like seeing this side of you, Mao-chan. “
Jun suddenly turned serious.
“Don’t worry, I won’t take you to any more horror movies, but I’ll never forget what happened today!”
Mao hit Jun on his back playfully when he took the opportunity to tease her again. He almost got up upon being hit.
“If you hit me again, I’ll change my mind and leave you in the darkness tonight...”
“What?” Mao was shocked. “You were planning to spend the night here?”
“I don’t want your neighbours to move out upon hearing your horrified screams in the middle of the night.” Jun said with a smirk on his face.
Mao pulled Jun into bed with her and snuggled closer to him, grateful that he understood how she felt. She was indeed afraid to have to sleep alone that night. She had problems erasing the scary images from her mind. They would keep appearing and they would haunt her for god knows how long until she was able to forget them.
Jun put his long arm around her slim figure and forced her closer to him before he kissed her gently. That kiss made Mao forget about the movie for a moment as she brushed her lips against Jun’s after he released her from the kiss.
