Day 2- Deceptively Sized Museums
Also the day of the repetitive museums. They weren’t bad, but I probably could have skipped the third without missing much. But let me go in order.

The day started with a walk up to Syntagma (Constitution) Square.

We started off from Grundarfjordur about 10 after breakfast at the hotel. The first stop was at a fermented shark museum. A family farm that has been producing the edible version of the Greenland shark for over 400 years, and is the largest supplier worldwide (meaning in Iceland, since they’re the only country that does this). The morning was a brief visit to the Skogarfoss waterfall, then time next door at the Skogar Folk Museum. An eclectic collection ranging from Viking age archeology to a naturalists donated collection to handicrafts spanning several centuries. What it tends to be lacking is dates. Still hoping the Volcano will act up (we’re going to see it tomorrow, regardless) so today was downtown Reykjavik. Started out from the hotel around 9:30, and walked through town, getting breakfast at the Laundromat Cafe, although not doing laundry. So, I’ve not mentioned this trip a lot because I just felt so uncertain it would go off, and because I felt kind of bad about other trips that had been cancelled, but it did happen, and the safety profile is a big chunk of why. Another day that was out of the apartment and on to the train. This time headed north to Hillerod and Fredericksborg castle. Apparently sometimes compared to Versailles, I'm not sure I'd make that comparison. It did remind me very strongly of some of the Loire chateaus writ large, although like yesterday's cathedral out of brick instead of stone. ( Read more... )
