Something you quickly learn when you’re a student of music is that silence is uncomfortable. Rests are rushed through, ignored because there’s something about a pause in the music that can make a group of musicians edgy. In a rest, there’s time for a wrong note to go off, someone to not cut off with everyone else; a whole world of damage can be ( Read more... )

It's always interesting to have the bandmates round. They're prone to keeping you in line. Just thought I'd warn you.

If that's the case then you've been slacking, David.

I have had bandmates around, Dave, for as long as I've been here. I get your point though.

Well, bandmates from your original band that you got a chance to write with. I'm sure you know each other more intimately.

Most people are frightened of silence because it's been attached with death. Life makes noise, so on. I think environment can only influence a person so much. You can have a hundred people telling someone they're fantastic but if one person knows just the right insult to fire then it erases the good work of the others. It can't be helped that the mind focuses on the negative.

That's a perspective I hadn't thought of. You're right, though, the negative sinks in much more than the positive, especially if they have a way with words to know exactly what will hurt.

I don't know if this makes me really abnormal but I actually enjoy silence a lot. The kind you get from being home alone and knowing that no one will interrupt it for a long time. Everyone craves good company but I guess the difference lies in necessary company and unnecessary. I never cared much for the latter. I can't stand it even, so I'd rather be alone.

I like reading you. And as far as insight goes, acts tend to fall apart. You just have to decide if it's worth sticking around for, regardless of final outcome. I'm really tired, I have no idea what I'm talking about. Can we quote Brand New to each other instead?

Help me out here, is it your career to act or to flirt with people's ex-boyfriends out of spite? Don't you have poor people to feed in Cambodia?

I'm very late in commenting, aren't I? There's much I could say in response, but I'll just say that it's nice to be here.
