Old-man-yelling at the news

On behalf of myself and anyone else who's emotionally fragile right now, I'd like to extend a big F-U to all the headline writers in the media for their handiwork on swine flu coverage. Never mind that none of the U.S. cases have been fatal, or that it's treatable with anti-virals like Tamiflu. No, we get alarmist, Chicken Little headlines such ( Read more... )

Tell you what, after having just gotten over the flu (and no idea if it was the new one or not), this is the last thing I need to hear right now. Why not just say people in the US will wind up puking for a week?

As someone who's chronically at least a little fucked up in the nose and throat area, it was the last thing I needed to hear, too.

Ok, thank you. Now I don't feel so bad wanting Perez Hilton to stfu.

You never had to feel bad, as nobody should get special deference just for being gay. I have the same contempt for Perez as I have for high-level figures in the Bush administration. He's on the forefront of our deepening cultural illiteracy. I can't believe he can call Miss California a "dumb bitch" on his blog, and people still treat him like a legitimate reporting figure.

Meh. Just goes to show that the left and the right are equally guilty of promoting free speech as long as it agrees with their viewpoints. I don't like the girl, but I feel bad for her.

Even though P.H. is a douche, I still can't feel bad for the girl. Beauty pageants are dumb.

The news reports have been less than helpful in understanding WTF swine flu is all about. Statements from the "experts" seem to range from "Some people might get a bit of flu" to "OMG WE"RE ALL GOING TO DIE."

Maybe it would help to read about it only on medical websites: WHO, NIH, etc. The rest of the media will just sensationalize it, as per usual.

I'm just waiting for the surgical masks to start appearing on subway riders, even though it's said they actually increase a healthy person's likelihood of contracting a pathogen, what with the exhaled moisture practically transforming them into Petri dishes.
