I made my first real stab at attacking the rampant blackberries today--I decided that since they essentially own a huge chunk of the backyard, they had no right to be sending vines into one of the bushes in the front. The transition is complete! Jalapena is now an official Outdoor Cat, as she has physically interacted with wildlife. Of course, the whole thing took place completely indoors, but we're not going to let a mere technicality like that stand in her way.
