Yeah, I did like Tintin better, although of course I'm biased! (As are you, by the same standards. Ah, well.) Definitely worth a rental if you get the chance, though.
Uncle Ben not dying would be even worse than the "Sandman really killed Uncle Ben" retcon. I know they probably don't want to repeat too much of what was in the first Spider-Man movie, but he has one of the most perfect superhero origins ever. Ben has to die for Peter to become Spider-Man. (Sorry, Ben.)
And sorry Stacys but at least one of you isn't long for this world.
On the plus side, if the movie succeeds it will be proof that Spider-Man is a story iconic enough to be deconstructed and reinterpreted, like the fairy tales of old? Yeah, that's all I got.
I'm glad the newest trailer has more of the wise-cracking. If the movie is like the Comic-Con clips, though, it'll be much lighter in tone than the trailers suggest. There was a much longer scene with the car thief in the alley and a longish meet cute with Peter and Gwen in the hallway of the high school. Plus the lab scenes were bright as well.
It's been a long time since I read the Stacy issues, but was he an ally from the start? Perhaps he'll come around by the end of the film (just in time to die?)
He wasn't an ally per se immediately, but I'm fairly certain he thought right off the bat that Spider-Man's intentions were good even if his execution wasn't. But my memories are fuzzy, too -- what I do remember is that was pretty much his attitude in his Untold Tales of Spider-Man appearances, which are set before his Silver Age debut. Essentially, I'm counting on Busiek to have remembered continuity better than me!
But yeah, I would not be at all surprised if that's how he bites it this time around.
