[ It's a beautiful fall day in the neighbourhood and the Slayer and her ex-Watcher are doing something they should have done a while ago. Despite the Shift (or perhaps, in a twisted way, because of it), they are sitting out on a pretty little checked blanket. A picnic basket stands nearby. Many fantastic, eye-opening heart-to-hearts are about to ( Read more... )

[ the slayer is growing to accept her muteness. it's not so bad -- who would she ever really want to talk to, anyway? her standards ought to be higher.

still...she reaches for a small china plate from the picnic basket and begins to portion out a snack for her beloved, kingly father. ]

[Giles closes the journal with a "snap" of finality and...blinks. Shakes his head. Shakes some of the story out, if only for the moment. Looks back at Buffy with a mixture of practical and fatherly concern.]

...what the hell did I just say?

[ a shrug of her shoulders. she doubts the plan will work, anyway. buffy opens her mouth as if to speak but -- ah, still can't. fine. she embraces it further and arranges a few grapes and some cheese.

these she holds out helpfully to giles. ]

[These Giles takes with a nod of thanks. A minute or two of quiet eating passes, before:]

Y-You, um, you don't have to worry. I know this story. N-Not as well as most, but...I've heard it before. Someone will come along that you, um, that you want to speak with.

Now I just hope that it won't take quite as long as it did in the story...

[One small part of Nami is pointing out that Buffy is her next door neighbour and things have already been faintly awkward between them what with the landing-on-Jack's-lap fiasco and she should really leave well enough alone.

The rest of her quite cheerfully smooths back her hair and makes herself look presentable for this lovely new damsel in distress. Execution, shmexecution. She's a prince, she doesn't do failure.

...so yes, shortly after this announcement, Nami will arrive on her trusty steed-- which happens to be a giant duck, but shh, just pretend.]

Afternoon.

[...that is a giant duck.

That is a giant duck.

Giles just...stares. Okay, he knew that Nami was running around as a dashing knight. But a duck.

Finally, he recovers himself enough to reply. By not looking at the duck.]

Good afternon.

[Not only is it a giant duck, but it's a giant, overreacting, electrical duck. However, Biri is playing the part of a noble steed today, and so just stands quietly while Nami slides off his back.]

So I'm not really familiar with this particular tale. [She sounds herself, though Nami can't quite prevent herself from sketching a bow in Buffy's direction. On the other hand, she's also not trying too hard.] How does it go?

[...he doesn't want to reply, he doesn't want to give anything away, he doesn't want to make anything easy on anyone...

It's an effort, speaking through gritted teeth, for Giles to reply. Doing so flies in the face of the story, but he's managed harder so far.]

Judging by my own behavior and Buffy's? Money's on "The Mute Princess". Dutch tale.

[In between being yo-yoed from one role to another in an increasingly bipolar fashion, Ginia finds herself back as a knight. Time to save princesses, slay rats, and fend off dragons again, eh? She silently hopes none of her friends are dragons as she goes out on a walk, coming across the quiet little picnic and-- is that a guillotine?!

Ginia looks at the two, then at the device, then back at the two. Seriously guys? What the hell?]

[Giles looks impassively back at her, only raising an eyebrow at the sight of her shock.

Something to say, Ginia?]

/Why is there a makeshift guillotine in the background, Giles?/

[There's a pause as she looks over Giles' outfit, trying to hide a smile. Hey, it's a nice costume.]

/Or would that be King Giles? My liege? Your Highness?/

There is a makeshift guillotine in the background to discourage unsuitable elements. Why else do you propose there would be a makeshift guillotine in the background, Ginia?

[Yep. Shifted to hell and back.]

It's a guillotine. It doesn't have to be very large. That's a French affectation.

Did you have something useful to add, Jack?

Aye---you're not at all dressed like an executioner. Where is your leather vest? Mask? Chaps?

[Wait, wait.....they don't wear chaps...]

Heavy hobnail boots?

I've had enough of boots of any sort, thank you. And we don't have anyone else to act as an executioner. I'm certainly not going to ask Buffy to do it.

[Buffy, in the background, does not look terribly comforted by this sentiment.]

I take it that the answer is "no", then.
