Olympics..and ME

As odd as this sounds, the Winter Games have taught me a great deal about myself. The results are in, and I've won the gold medal for Boring Vindictiveness ( Read more... )

I was just talking about htis sort of thing last night. I still hate sports, but all the drama and crashes make it interesting.

Real rivalries and drama - not the kind manufactured by the networks - is the hot fudge on the vanilla ice cream that is competitive sporting.

I think we deserve major pats on the back for fully acknowledging Chad Hedrick's toolishness at the very outset of the games. Well done, my dear, well done! I have to say that he lost respect right at the beginning due to the fawning his family did over Laura Bush. That's when I knew he was awful. His Mean Girls like baiting of Shani Davis in every interview he gives is ridiculous and highly offensive, especially since it is so transparently selfish. Just ridiculous.

I feel for Shani Davis. He's not perfect and he has that stage mother, but come on. They did a great job of making him seem like this awful, arrogant, aloof asshole (alliteration!!), but Apolo Ohno debunked that by saying that they are close friends and that he's great. Plus, I take Joey Cheek's endorsement of Davis very seriously. Speaking of, he is just the best. I adore him and hope he stays in the limelight for a while.

We get mad props for seeing through his bullshit days before he provided the definitive proof of his jerkitude.

Your alliteration is awesome (and apt!) I totally agree that the fact that he gets along with Ohno and Cheek shows that maybe it's not Davis that's the jerk, but the guy who can't seem to let go of the team pursuit loss. If Hendrick wants to get mad at someone who prevented him from getting the elusive 5 gold medals, a little introspection is in order.

JOEY CHEEK IS SO CUTE OMG.

The Canadian commentators love Shani Davis because he lives in trains in Calgary and so they are all SQUEE with the apparent influence that has obviously had in his success.

Lindsey Jacobellis... that's like, tragedy that's not. A silver medal in the Olympics! Yeah yeah she lost the gold because she failed at an unnecessary trick. BURN THE WITCH. All the commentators are like "omg SHOWOFF" but seriously, it's snowboarding. Showing off is practically required.

Everything I've heard about NBC reporting sucks, what with the hysterical commentary and exploitation of backstories, but I still wish I could watch their videos.

♥ Olympics! ♥

Joey Cheek is my hero.

Davis' Canadian training regime is held up as one of the reasons he's (OMG) not a team player. If I had to spend an excess of time with the Texas Tool, I'd probably head north as well.

Don't get me wrong about LJ - I still think she's a complete idiot. If she'd blown a team gold under the same circumstances, I'd be pretty pissed, but the fact that she threw away her own bid at history is a lot easier to swallow. She has another shot in four years if she wants it, which is good. The only thing Americans like more than watching karma kick someone in the ass is sweet, sweet redemption.

Note to self: Hang out at speed-skating oval more often.

He hot.

Yeah, it's definitely been one-sided between those two. The media would LOVE for Davis to fight back, but he's been wise not to bite.

I'm not sure how much of a factor race played (but saying "none" seems naive), but I think you're absolutely right that the hero was already determined by the media before the games even began.

Congratulations for getting me to read this whole post when I haven't watched a single second of the Olympics.

Excellent! I sort of figured that this entry would be skipped or skimmed by many, but I appreciate you sticking with it.

The only thing I can say you've missed out on is the cuteness of the American women's curling team.
