Beyond Reach by Karin Slaughter. It just gets more and more difficult to talk about this series without spoiling major plot points. I guessed at this book's ending before I even picked it up, mostly because of external things, but it's still a big shock and a huge turning point for Slaughter's work. That said, this is one time when the avalanche of crime and depravity in small-town Georgia wasn't entirely convincing; I still enjoyed the book and I'm going to keep reading, but it did lose me a little by the end.
