Finally - women's value to TV is recognized! And also, Danny Bilson is an executive vice president?

Some interesting bits from an article about a panel on transmedia at the National Association of Broadcasters meeting. The panel was chaired by Henry Jenkins (of Textual Poachers fame) and featured, among others, Kim Moses (exec dir of the company that produces Ghost Whisperer) and Danny Bilson (exec vice president of Core Games, THQ games).

Kim Moses produces data to show that women totally rock and why your television show should pay attention to them... )

I skimmed the article - not enough time to read it now, unfortunately! But I just wanted to say I love what Danny Bilson is saying here. He was openly supportive of fanfiction at Cascade Con, and very engaged with the whole notion of 'fandom' - he described himself as a 'fanboy', and stressed how well he understood where we all were coming from. I love to see him on this panel, recognising the interactive nature of media/fans in today's online world, and specifically the role of women. Really interesting stuff - I can't wait to read the whole thing when I get home later. Thanks for posting it!

You're welcome! I found his comments very interesting, and especially his support of fan fiction. I really have to wonder how much of that attitude was engendered when he was making TS - because although The Flash was pretty cool, I don't think any of their earlier shows had quite the fan following that TS has... ;-)

The thing is... as immersive as I get with my favorite shows, involvement in a baby-birth plotline is really not what I want. I have Very Strong Opinions about birth/baby/child care, and I don't think I've ever encountered TV parenting that looked anything like what I and my friends (well, the friends whose parenting I can stand) do.

I do much better with things I'm not intimately familiar; I think, in fact, that's the point - immersion helps me experience what I'm curious about.

Well, ad campaigns/transmedia campaigns are not going to appeal to everyone, of course, and it is sort of disturbingly sexist that they would think, "Hey, how do we appeal to women? I know - BABIES!"...

But at least someone is recognizing the spending power that women have, instead of being all about "let's get those 18-39 year-old guys"...
