My advice to anyone considering applying for Ph.D. programs: take the GRE (and subject test, if applicable) well before you need to start worrying about applications. It's pretty stressful to work on both at once. I'm also supposed to be doing an independent project at work that I haven't even started on due to studying for the GRE. I need to get ( Read more... )

Alternatively, you could do what I did and not worry about the GRE at all until you realize that you have to take it *this week* if it's getting there on time, then just go in and take it without having looked at a practice exam or thought about it at all... And hey, I got in! Math scores were pretty weak, but I was told that my application essays and personal statement were "very good" by admissions advisors. That, and knowing how to compute arc length isn't all that relevant to HCI.

Except my undergrad GPA = not stellar. And it's even worse because my science GPA is lower than my overall GPA. So I'm trying to make the rest of my application really good to make up for it.

Also, it's not enough that I get in to a decent school. I need to get into enough schools so that Kobey and I have a chance of getting into the same one.

Yeah, I probably would have studied more if I hadn't already been drowning in school... But I got in everywhere I applied, so good application essays really can help too, and knowing in advance who you want to work with and what they're doing.
