Yay, goat's milk!

My coworker Laurel has goats, and one of them is a milking goat. I've been avoiding dairy for the past year of so, but decided to try Juliet's raw, organic milk. So far, my body is tolerating it extremely well, which is awesome. It's tasty and feels good in my body ( Read more... )

Just yesterday on the radio I heard about an Arabic company that was making chocolate with Camel milk rather than Cow. I assume "making chocolate" is complicated, but if not.... :-)

Interesting. Of course, I'm of the opinion that milk has no place in most chocolate. . .

But I'd love to try camel milk at some point. I think my body just really doesn't like cow juice, which is known to be harder to digest anyway.

Ooooo, you could make generic mac-n-cheese mix TASTY!

Yeah, but that would involve eating cheese mix packets, which just sounds like a bad idea. Also, they contain cow's milk, which my body really isn't down with.

I believe the lactose content of goat's milk is much lower than cow's. :)

I've recently found that dairy/egg products from animals I have personally met (like the ducks and goats on my friend's farm!) are within my ethics to consume, and was thrilled to discover that my body can tolerate goat cheese! I no longer seem to be lactose intolerant at all, in fact...but my body seems to think I'm going to get sick if I drink milk; I tried to drink some of the goat milk and had a physiological panic reaction, but didn't actually get sick from it, or from eating the cheese either.

I couldn't tell ya what to do with the milk, but the cheese is totally kick-ass. Crumble it on EVERYTHING!

I'm not actually lactose intolerant, is the funny thing. I have been in the past, so I know how my body reacts to lactose it can't process (bloating, gassy, intestinal upset), but that's not what happens with cow's milk--I just feel icky and get yeast infections.

If you make your way down to Asheville, I'll totally hook you up with Juliet's milk (and Laurel will probably be selling homemade goat cheese by then as well). I haven't actually met Juliet, but Laurel gushes about her goats and loves them lots, so I know she's well cared-for and happy, and has a couple playmates. She's cute--I've seen pics.

I can't wait to start getting cheese once Laurel makes more of it. Actually, I could make my own if I got cultures, which would be totally fun. I'd love to have milk goats and sheep eventually.

Yeah, I've heard most people who have problems with cow milk/lactose can enjoy goat's milk. I LOVE goat cheese. It's great on a salad or even pasta.
