One Laptop Per Child

We just got a new contractor in at work to help me on a virtualization project, and it turns out he's the president of the Silicon Valley Linux Users' Group. Apparently you get some perks with the title, since he brought an OLPC in to work today. It's really tiny and extremely cool. He was showing off the apps and the programming tools. Featured in newsweek as one of the real ways to help the world.

A computer that runs on basically thin-air is dreamy. It still isn't at the right price, though. It is approaching the game console level, so that is promising.

Well it's actually about $200, I think, but they're not selling them directly to consumers at that price. Their main market is governments and charities, I believe. Maybe someday they'll adapt it to the consumer market and make it available for the actual price, but I don't know if that's really part of their plan.

Well the purchase plan was actually an afterthought. Originally, they weren't going to sell them individually at all. They realized that they were getting more interest from the consumer market than from governments, though, so they changed their approach a little. I think it's still mostly to generate interest, though.

Google gave it to him for free. I think it's a prototype. It's not being sold yet.
