Chapter 03

Reita was starving. He had had a busy and tiring day thus far and his stomach was crying out for some food. Having absolutely no idea where he usually ate lunch, he wandered aimlessly for a few minutes before he finally spotted Ruki and hurried after him. That’s how he ended up sitting at a table in the cafeteria with Kai and Ruki.

With the amount of food his mom packed for his lunch, Reita might as well have pulled out a buffet table instead of a bento. “What is with all of that?” Ruki asked incredulously as he stared wide-eyed at Reita’s humongous lunch.

“My mom wants me to be fat,” Reita said as he rolled his eyes and quickly picked up his chopsticks and began to scarf down some of his lunch. His chopsticks stopped half way to his mouth and the dumpling they had been holding rolled on to the table as Reita spotted Uruha sitting at a table nearby. Completely ignoring the loss of his dumpling, Reita asked, “Does he always sit by himself at lunch?”

“Who?” Kai asked.

“Uru-I mean Takashima.”

“Reita, what is up with this Takashima obsession you seem to have today?!” Kai asked, laughing a little.

Blushing, Reita said, “I’m not obsessed! He just seems lonely!”

“He isn’t always by himself,” Ruki informed. “Sometimes he has one of the seniors with him.”

“Yeah, I think his name is Shiroyama,” Kai contributed.

Kai had barely finished talking before Reita was standing up and walking over towards Uruha’s lunch table. Stopping behind the chair across from Uruha’s, Reita asked, “Would it be alright if I join you?”

Uruha glanced at who was addressing him curiously, noting how he was being talked to twice as often as usual today. Reita smiled as Uruha looked up at him with widening eyes. Not able to say anything on account of his state of surprise, Uruha simply nodded and turned to stare at the tabletop.

Pulling out the chair and sitting down, Reita asked, “Are you always by yourself?” Uruha shook his head as he glanced nervously at Reita. “My friends said you sometimes have one of the seniors sitting with you…”

Uruha gave a small nod and then quietly spoke, “He didn’t come to school today. He doesn’t like being here much.”

Nodding in response, Reita then paused. Finally he asked, “Am I usually mean to you or something? You seem awfully nervous and uncomfortable…”

Uruha’s head shot up to look at Reita-shocked at the question. “N-no! You’re not mean to me, Suzuki-san, you-“

“Reita.”

“Huh?” Uruha asked.

“Just Reita is fine,” he said as he smiled and nodded reassuringly.

“O-oh… Okay,” Uruha said as he nodded. “You’re not mean to me, R-Reita,” he answered as Reita’s name rolled off of his tongue awkwardly. “You usually don’t pay any attention to me at all,” he finished in a surprisingly-to Reita at least-sad tone, and then went back to staring at his lunch.

Reita really wasn’t sure how he should feel, because he was feeling so many things at once. For example, he was upset that Uruha seemed saddened by the fact Reita didn’t pay attention to him. But on the other hand, he was curious as to why it should matter since Uruha didn’t seem to know him very well. Also, Reita was still very hungry, but he was too concerned about his current situation to worry for his empty stomach. “Uruha, I’m sorry if I upset you. I don’t mean to not pay attention to you.”

“Wh-what did you just call me?” Uruha asked.

“Shit, I’m sorry! I meant Takashima-san!” Reita corrected himself.

“Uruha?” he asked.

Cursing inwardly, still bothered by his mistake, Reita mumbled, “Yeah, that was it.”

“Is th-that a nickname or something?”

“Uh, yeah… it’s a nickname,” Reita answered, scratching his cheek nervously. He didn’t mean to put himself in an awkward situation like this one, but he was so used to calling him “Uruha” that it was a hard habit to break.

Uruha looked up at Reita through his bangs as a light blush tinged his cheeks. “You have a nickname for me?”

Biting his lip as he paused, Reita then answered with, “Yeah, I guess I do,” and laughed nervously-hoping Uruha wouldn’t be freaked out. To Reita’s surprise, Uruha broke out into a grin. It was the first time he’d seen Uruha smile since this whole second-chance shebang started. Feeling more confident, Reita smiled a little as he asked, “Is… is that okay?” and earned a happy and enthusiastic nod from Uruha.

Ruining the moment, Reita’s stomach decided to scream out its hunger with an ugly sounding growl, causing Uruha to giggle. “Oh my God, I’m so hungry! I should probably go back over there and eat. Or maybe bring my food over this way…”

“Uh…” Uruha started awkwardly, “I don’t see any food at your table.”

“Huh?” Reita asked and then turned to look at Ruki and Kai sitting at his lunch table. Uruha was correct in saying there was no food at their table. “Are you KIDDING ME? Those fuckers ate my lunch!” he yelled, pounding his fist on the table.

Biting his lip as he tried to hold back his laughter, Uruha finally managed to speak without laughing as he said, “You can have some of my lunch if you’d like…” and pushed his bento towards Reita. Uruha then quickly focused his gaze on his lap.

“Really?!” Reita asked, excitedly. “You wouldn’t mind sharing with me? I’m just so hungry…”

Uruha looked up at Reita and blushed as he shook his head, saying, “N-no, I don’t mind! Eat as much as you’d like.” Reita grinned, pulling the bento closer to him and gratefully eating some of its contents-thinking the entire time how happy he was that he was with Uruha.

“I’m going to ignore the skipping you’ve been doing the entire time we’ve walked home, alright?” Ruki said. “I’ll just pretend it never happened.” Reita bounced on his feet a little as he jumped in front of Ruki, causing his friend to stop walking. “Oi! Out of my way!” he said, shoving Reita.

“I’m bigger than you~” Reita sang, grasping Ruki’s wrists gently. Ruki hissed at Reita, but Reita only chuckled and let go of his wrists-continuing his skipping up to his front porch. Turning around to face Ruki-who was sneering-Reita waved and said he’d see him tomorrow. He walked into his house and greeted his mom with a hug.

“What’s this for?” she asked, laughing happily.

“Nothing! I’m just happy today,” he answered as he gave his mom a wave and hurried upstairs to his room. Opening his bedroom door, the first thing Reita noticed was Lorenzo lounging on his bed as he read one of Reita’s magazines. He was lying on his stomach and his legs were kicking lazily in the air while his wings fluttered every few seconds. Flipping the page of the magazine, he asked without turning to look at Reita, “So, how did things go?”

Dropping his school bag to the floor, Reita sat in his desk chair as he spun it around to face his bed and replied, “Don’t you have a fairy hotline or something? One of those bubble things you can look in?”

Slamming the magazine shut, Lorenzo turned his head to the side and glared at Reita. “It’s called making conversation.”

“Oh,” Reita said with a shrug. “Well, in that case. I met Uruha!” Right after he had spoken, Reita tilted his head to the side as he thought of how strange it had sounded-that he had met Uruha today. Shrugging, he continued, “He’s really shy. It’s kind of weird. I’m not used to him being so… so…” he trailed off as he tried to find the right words to describe Uruha’s behavior. “Socially awkward.”

Lorenzo rolled onto his back and cracked his knuckles as he said “I guess we’ll have our work cut out for us then, won’t we?”

“Work? What do you mean?” Reita asked, staring dumbly at Lorenzo, who rolled onto his side and propped his head up with his arm as he looked at Reita.

“Why don’t you tell me the story about the time when a person you just met walked up to you and told you they were in love with you,” Lorenzo said.

Laughing as he nodded thoughtfully, Reita said, “That actually happens a lot.”

Throwing the magazine he had been reading earlier at Reita and earning a glare from said-party, Lorenzo added, “Tell me about a time a person you just met who wasn’t a fan of yours walked up to you and told you they were in love with you.”

“Um,” Reita said, as he bit his lip pensively. “That’s never happened.”

“Exactly, because people don’t do that. It’s creepy,” Lorenzo explained. “You’ll have to woo him first.”

“I don’t even know that that means!” Reita exclaimed.

Sighing heavily, Lorenzo said, “Charm him. Pursue him. Romance him. Make him want to nibble your biscuits.”

“Make him want to what?!” Reita asked, blushing deeply.

With a roll of his eyes, Lorenzo added, “It shouldn’t be too difficult. You already know he’s gay and potentially has the hots for you. I mean you two were totally dating. That’s what landed you here in the first place.”

“So what are you suggesting I do?” Reita asked, his eyes widened as he focused all of his attention on Lorenzo as he waited for whatever advice Lorenzo had to offer.

“Well what did you do in the first place that started your relationship?”

“I pushed him against a wall and started making out with him?” Reita answered as his eyebrow rose.

“And you didn’t get slapped in the face?!” Lorenzo asked incredulously.

“What?! No! He was checking me out the whole night! So I just went for it.”

“Well aren’t you quite the smooth operator,” he remarked sarcastically. “Maybe you should not do that this go ‘round. Sit with him at lunch. Talk with him before class. Wave at him when you see him in the hallways. Maybe you could offer to walk him home or something like that.”

Smiling a little, Reita said, "That doesn't sound too difficult…"
