‘We’re what?’ Woohyun couldn’t believe what he had heard from Sungyeol and Dongwoo. He had almost fallen off his chair (partly because he was leaning on it, as always) and ended up gawking at the two seated in front of him.

Dongwoo was all but smiles and verified, ‘We’re merging schools!’

‘That’s fucking insane!’ Woohyun practically screamed, alerting the teacher who was still going on and on about cubic functions at the front. Frankly, nobody was listening. Balls of scrunched up paper were being tossed around everywhere, remains of lunches from months ago were scattered all over in an unceremonious fashion, a student was even tied up and gagged at the back of the class - Woohyun was to thank. The place was a pigsty and was one for as long as the students could remember. However, their classroom was just the tip of it. The whole fucking school was trash.

‘Nam Woohyun, pay attention to the language you use on school grounds!’ the teacher warned, pointing his whiteboard marker towards him.

Woohyun was the only student the teacher picked on. It was daily knowledge that Woohyun was the head of the pack and everyone listened to him. Whatever he said went. Well, except for Dongwoo and Sungyeol. They never obeyed him and just pissed him off every chance they got.

Woohyun saluted Mr Baek in mockery. ‘Sure, sir.’

Back to sulking.

‘Come on. I hear their location is way better than ours and it’s not like we’re separating. This could be fun!’ Dongwoo persuaded, sensing how frustrated his friend was. Woohyun was a pissy bitch, in his opinion. Why couldn’t he just seek the good things in life like Dongwoo did?

Sungyeol leaned back on his chair and slapped Woohyun’s shoulder. ‘Yeah, don’t be so negative,’ he teased, giggling with Dongwoo.

Woohyun groaned, resting his head on his graffitied desk. ‘I can’t help it! I don’t want to breathe the same air as those East campus smartasses! Haven’t you heard all those rumours about them? Studying away all the free time they have, tutoring each other -‘

‘Wow, it sounds like you could learn something from them,’ Sungyeol yawned, opening a packet of Oreos. The kid derived from Doraemon, Woohyun suspected.

‘Shut up, you ass!’ Woohyun attempted to pour energy drink over his head, but Sungyeol was quick enough to dodge, jumping over his desk and running to the front of the class.

When he returned, Dongwoo petted his head as he pouted. ‘Don’t worry, Sungyeol. He’s just riled up because he might not be head of the school anymore.’

‘Why do I even hang out with you dicks? All you do is make fun of me and make me pay for your food.’

Sungyeol snatched the can of drink from Woohyun’s fingers, making him curse (and further proving his point). ‘Teasing you is how we show our appreciation, Woohyunnie,’ he stated, gulping down as much as he could before Woohyun snatched it back.

‘Yeah, Sungyeol’s right! And making you pay for our food is your way of showing us how much you love us.’

Woohyun rolled his eyes, standing up to look out the window. He mumbled, ‘I must love you a hell of a lot.’

A few freshmen were playing in the courtyard, throwing toilet paper at each other. Woohyun, Dongwoo and Sungyeol had all agreed school was never boring. That’s the main reason why they even attended classes.

‘Come on, don’t be like that!’ Dongwoo came up behind him, wrapping his arms around Woohyun’s waist only to be shoved away. ‘On the bright side, you might actually make some new friends and maybe you’ll finally have someone to pick on.’

Woohyun scoffed, ‘Befriending them? Over my dead body.’

-

‘Sunggyu-hyung!’ Sungjong ran over to Sunggyu who had stopped and turned to face him.

Sunggyu blinked, wondering what was so urgent that Sungjong had to run over here. The only running students did at their school was in gym class. No one ran in the hallways, even during a fire drill.

‘Yeah?’ he voiced, fixing the boy’s hair.

The younger raised a piece of paper in front of Sunggyu’s face. ‘Did you get the notice?’

‘Of course I did. Everyone in the school got them.’

Myungsoo appeared, wrapping his arms around both their necks and leading them down the hall. Sunggyu shook him off. He never really liked touching and he believed people should keep their hands to themselves - even if Myungsoo was his brother.

‘They can’t be serious, can they?’ Sungjong exclaimed, pointing towards the notice which stated: Paran West Campus will be merging with Paran East Campus and will therefore become Paran High School. The students of West Campus will be transferred over to East Campus for its location is better facilitated after summer vacation.

Sunggyu shook his head. ‘Our school wouldn’t pull a prank on us, Sungjong.’

‘How can you be so calm about this?’

Sungjong honestly liked things the way they were. School was quiet and comfortable. Students came to school to learn, teachers came to school to teach. They had lunch-time activities/clubs where only a handful of people came because they wanted to. School was peaceful and a great learning environment. Sungjong didn’t want the delinquents from West campus to ruin everything.

‘Sungjong, it can’t be that bad. We’ll stay out of their way and they will of ours,’ Sunggyu laughed a little at the pout on his face.

Myungsoo slapped the youngest on the head, agreeing with Sunggyu, ‘Don’t be so negative, Jong. Maybe this school won’t be so mind-numbing anymore.’

‘How about you, Howon-hyung? What do you think?’ Sungjong asked. Myungsoo jumped a little when he saw Howon soldiering next to him. Where the hell did he come from?

Myungsoo inspected the other a little, coming to the conclusion, ‘Um, Howon doesn’t think. Right, Gyu-hyung?’

Sunggyu just stared at Howon for moment, ignoring Myungsoo and Sungjong altogether. Howon did think, or he used to think. Something inside Howon’s ribcage was just switched-off, Sunggyu theorised. He barely talked, barely smiled, and when he was angry he was furious to the point he seemed sadistic. But it appeared anger was the only thing he could express. No one knew what had happened to make him this way except for Sunggyu, and that was because Sunggyu was the most trustworthy person in existence.

‘Myungsoo, don’t talk about Howon like he’s not a human,’ he said steadily, exchanging glances with the said boy to Myungsoo’s right. ‘It’s going to be fine, right Howon?’

Howon blinked.
