in "everthing's nice" the main characters wave of cultural adjustment is an intense one. it was hard for her to distinguish how others were portraying her inside the family's home. the elderly lady shot faces and tones of voice from "firm" to "smilingly". once the main character walked into the house her cultural wave was that of high expectations ( Read more... )

one way i can think of adjusting to a culture is learning the language prior to arrival. however, when you travel to a place that is when you learn the language the best through conversational speaking of the natives. but having a basis for the language before going somewhere would facilitate the feeling of loneliness because one could talk to the ( Read more... )

This summer I am returning to Ethiopia but not for study abroad, but for volunteer work abroad. I will be there for the month of July and probably most of August depending on my financial situation. My goals for the class are to figure out how to incorporate independent travels with college credits here at evergreen. I have many plans for abroad studies/work, and I am in the midst of deciding which of these goals or plans would best benefit me in my future. After reading the first 43 pages of Kohl’s Survival
Kit for Overseas Living, I thought that it was ok.
Some of the author’s perspectives seemed skewed to me.
Right away on the third paragraph of chapter 1 it
