Beta: It's hard to read your story without line spaces between the paragraphs. And every time a different person speaks, you need to double space betweeen lines.

"Grant?"

"Yes Jack?" replied Grant, looking up from the computer monitor before him to see Jack leaning in the doorway.

"Why is there a stuffed penguin toy on your desk?"

Grant's face lit up as he picked up the toy and turned it to face Jack.

"it's" = it is. Whenever you use "it's" substitute "it is" and see if it makes sense. "and caressing it is head" is not right, so it should be "and caressing its head".
