Just.....go away!

I do not do Halloween. I admit I do go to parties and such, but very seldom do I dress up. Mostly I go for the camaraderie, seeing people I do not see often. The food does not hurt, either. But really, it is not my holiday, or actually the aspects we see in the secular world are not what I know. When I was a child, we went to mass that night, ( Read more... )

When I was growing up, there was a simple solution to avoid trick-or-treaters coming to your door. You turned the porch light off. Living in a rural area this did wonders. While, I do not share your views on Halloween, I'm disappointed your area does not heed so simple a practice that would make your life so much more enjoyable on that day.

When I was growing up, in suburbia, it was much the same.

I think it's not so much that his area doesn't heed that. I think it's more that... things have changed. When we were growing up, I don't think this kind of thing--

would ever have gotten to the point where it's getting referred to as a 'yearly tradition'.

I disagree. He does make significant reference to when he was growing up and Devil's Night has been common, albeit more active in Urban Areas, at least since I was a kid.

I second dwarven_brewer. We knew enough to know that if the porch light was off not to bother. And if it was left on and no one answered? Leave well enough alone. There was usually a reason why some people didn't entertain the notion of trick or treaters. Maybe they were much like yours, maybe not.

The trick-or-treaters I don't mind so much, especially when they're of the young child sort. It's the older kids that think that Halloween gives them a free pass to cause trouble and damage property....yeah. That's where I draw the line.
