I see you are apparently unaware of the Thousand and One Nights as well as jillions of other Mid-east myths and legends. :P

Yeah, I mean... the Crusades were a really big topic back when fairy tales were still being invented. It would be interesting to see European fairy tales playing with those kinds of ideas and settings, especially in that way, where it would be especially relevant to the time.

Ted Dekker's Chosen took place in a world of deserts where the main civilization lived in scattered oasises. I didn't enjoy the book at all because it was terribly cliched, but it was definitely European-style fantasy and definitely took place in the desert.
