So I discover today that if our baby is born premature, the hospital will not let us take her home until we've taken an infant CPR course. This is purely hypothetical, we aren't experiencing any problems and have no reason to expect her to be premature. I just wanted to make that very clear because I don't want any concerned inquiries making ( Read more... )

I don't know if it's a Northside policy or a Kaiser policy. I've only heard about it, since it's not something we expect to have to deal with for Marie. A sort of 'yeah, people take this class and you HAVE to if you have a premie because' word of mouth that I suppose might even be wrong--it might simply be heavily recommended.

But the car seat is a fact. I've read that too many places to think it might be another game of Telephone.

I'm not sure how I feel about safety laws in general, especially ones that protect children. But I can see the point, about the exchange of safety for freedom.

We took a similar class (because Cosmo had pneumonia the day she was born). I had the impression that if we had said no, they couldn't have stopped us, but they would probably have asked us to sign some kind of release along with the checkout papers. Similarly, if I had refused the wheelchair ride to the car, I doubt they would have sent out the hospital cops to wrestle me back into it, they just would have wanted it made very clear that I was doing it against their advice.

Don't sweat it too much, it's only about an hour of your time.

Preach on.

What gets me is the fact that there are so many crappy parents out there -- did they have to take these classes? If they did, how the hell did they get their little piece o' paper? That sort of thing leads me to believe that the class is pretty ersatz.
