One thing interests me from this article is about conciousness-raising (C-R). The conciousness discussed about here is on error. It is mentioned in this journal that for students to gain error consciousness they need to know the reason why some errors occur, they need to aware of the source of the errors made.
One of the offerings that C-R has is helping learners to have the sense of ownership of the target language. I think it is an important matter for learners to have such sense. It will make them more responsible of their own learning progress which may lead them to perform their best in learning the target language.
Related to my previous posts of the same kind, this article also mentioned about the major cause of UAE students’ error is the interference of their first language (L1). Many of them do the fault of applying their L1 grammar rules in learning English. We know that this activity is an error done by many English learners all around the world. As I have mentioned in my previous post, it is due to the learners’ tendency, or probably need, to have something to compare in order to understand the target language in learning better. And the thing that they have is the rules of their own language.
Teachers have to assist their students not to rely much on comparing their native language with the language they are learning. It is important to introduce the culture of the target language to students for them to understand the languge itself better. I am sure when students have some kind of understanding of the background culture of the language they are learning, they will perform better performance in teaching and learning process.
