We had my grandparents' 50th anniversary reception, and watched the movie my uncle made by setting a bunch of photos of my grandparents, their kids, and us grandkids to very emotional (sappy) music. The other day, Michy's on-again-off-again pookie pinned on his second stripe, which is the Naval equivalent of Tech Sergeant. Apparently naval promotions for the enlisted below senior NCO are pretty informal - no board or anything, just a general show up at work one day and be informed you're promoted. In Memoriam...
I didn't know the USS Utah still lay in Pearl Harbor, where it had been capsized after Japanese torpedoes ripped it apart on 7 December 1941. The wreck lies on the opposite side of Ford Island from the USS Arizona memorial and the USS Missouri, the battleship on which the Japanese formally surrendered to General MacArthur on 2 September 1945.
