Does "Digital: A Love Story" count?

That's the one I was about to recommend, too. The "hacking" is really just support for the story, but the UI has a certain charm.

what's the gameplay like, for the hacking sections? Is it any fun, or is it like dark signs, meaning command-line hacking sim stuff?

It's mostly abstract - it's really there to drive the story. If you have fond reminiscences of Amiga, you'll probably enjoy them, but Digital is interactive fiction more than a hacking game - albeit interactive fiction about the social experience of being a BBS-based hacker in the late 80s / early 90s.
