i've traveled with Syd back to Michigan (14 hours) a bazillion times over the past 6 years...she's great in the car. so that's not really an issue for us. thanks for your vote though!

how much is the rental car? in particular, is the plane ticket cheaper? let's do some subtraction. how does the difference between rental car and plane ticket (assuming car > ticket) compare to gifts?

OK, first and foremost: being with loved ones on Christmas is more important than delivering "2 more gifts you desperately want to buy." I'm assuming the gifts are for loved ones and so I guarantee you that they would understand receiving them a week or a few weeks or a month late. I know that it's not as perfect or romantic or pretty for them to be late, but the fact that the thought even crossed your mind should hold people over until you can deliver the goods.
