Question for you smart people: What is the best way to store electronic data over a long time period on a home budget?

I foolishly tried to upgrade. My system will now not boot. I write this using a live cd. I hate ubuntu so much.

Wei and I are thinking about moving to London, and buying a very small house in the orbiting suburbs. Any suggestions from anyone about how to gather information about the livability of areas online, to minimize foot-time in London? Equally, any suggestions about locations to consider?
