Jan 17, 2012 17:09

Since 1999, LiveJournal has been a safe harbor of self-expression and creativity, with the most substantial privacy policies of any social site. We believe the Internet must remain a place that is free to use, free to explore, and free to express.

Not at all sarcastic: the DDoS woes and downtime issues LJ recently faced (in support of free speech in Russia!) are still too fresh in the minds of users.

If LJ took content down as part of their protest, that would become the focus, with a flood of "OMG, LJ down AGAIN???" This way, they focus attention on the actual issue.

The lack of content is a demonstration of what the internet will look like if the acts pass. Are you dense?

Incorrect. It's not a demonstration of what the internet will look like if the acts pass, it's a demonstration to get more people to notice and join the cause. None of the blacked-out sites I went to look like they'll look after passage. Remember, most sites will only have to heavily edit the content they currently feature, either by removing the offending material outright or following the new copyright restrictions in other ways. Biggies like Craigslist and Wikipedia won't simply "disappear". Google won't have to have a black rectangle in front of its logo or anything. By demonstrating they're aiming for spotlight, not premonition.

It's not too late though. Not saying that I have any audience at all, but I think that an option should be given during the next log-in and anyone who chooses to participate in the black-out can.
All of us who chose to can always just write on Notepad or Microsoft Word until we lift the black-out so we can save our ideas for the duration of the protest.
