Mundane Darkness

Catlobster

AKA: Crustacean Kitty, Lobstercat
Appearance: Very lobster-like, but with fur and a longer tail. Instead of pincers it has long, feline claws. They come in a variety of colors, from muddy red shells with tabby fur or blackish blue shells with long white fur.
Speed: Fast enough on four legs, it moves more like a speedy lobster out of water than a graceful cat.
Traits/Powers: Unknown? It appears to meow... a lot. Like a cat stuck in a tin can. I’ve seen some darkness break one open to eat and die shortly after so I assume the meat is poison.
Location: Scattered here and there through the city, in back alleys as well as around watery places. Most common around shores and beaches.
Rarity: Common pest.
Notes: Don’t be deceived by the sounds. That’s not a real kitten, at least I don’t think it is. I know there are cats all over the city at night, but most of them have learned to be silent..

Crystal Spider

Appearance: As the name says, it looks like it's built of crystal. Eight spindly long legs of sharp crystal, a small head and huge eyes, and a body that's the size of a human head. These spiders are large, clear as cut glass, and not too friendly-looking. They may look like crystal but they are fully organic.
Speed: Fast, and they travel in hordes. They move with great speed and jump huge leaps and bounds.
Traits/Powers: They spin crystal-like threads to build their webs. These webs are not only strong but sharp, able to cut the flesh of a normal human easy enough. But the cuts are only paper cut deep (unless you are thrashing around in it). The older the web the weaker it is though, so don't bother trying to conserve and cultivate the threads. After some time it becomes brittle.
Location: All of the city.
Rarity: Not so rare. The larger the spider the rarer though. Smaller ones can be found in droves all over.
Notes: No use trying to kill them, just run. The more time you spend killing them the more of will them gather. When hit with a sharp object, their bodies send off a ringing tone that calls others to its aid. The more often the tone is heard the more that come to assist.

Death Head Squid

AKA: Death Squid
Appearance: Six legs with a squid-like head that branches off into three hard points. A small white faced ‘skull’ that looks like a mask appears to be the face and eyes. They seem to come in earthy tones of red, brown, blue, green and yellow, depending on where they spawned. Tiny teeth and suckers found on the underside are used for attaching to things.
Speed: Unknown. They are found attached to Mutation and other Humanoid creatures mostly. Predominantly found attached to the neck of The Unhinged.
Traits/Powers: Attaches at the head, neck or spine of humans or other darkness creatures. While attached to Darkness, they seemed to assist in keeping it lively and strong, lending its own power to that creature. If attached to a human, it drains them of blood and energy, engorging its squishy sack-like head with blood.
Location: Scattered through out the city.
Rarity: Common
Notes: When not attached to other beings or creatures they can be found clinging to tall buildings, so they can drop from above and latch on to creatures. If seen on the ground, it’s generally assumed they tried to grab a creature and failed, now slowly trying to scale a building or tree once more to give it another go. They will attempt to latch on to legs, arms and other parts of a body if they can.

Deer Fleas
AKA: Darkness Ticks, Death Deer Fleas
Appearance: Tiny, tiny tiny. Like a normal flea. Very hard to see! If you can get one under a microscope you will see what looks like a common flea with extra arms that are sharper and better at clinging to hair and skin. They also have sharper mouths which they use to dig under skin and move around.
Speed: Fast. Very fast. Like normal fleas.
Traits/Powers: Sharper equipment for digging under skin. A darkness flea will bore into a creatures flesh and run under the surface skin. It is very painful and very hard to get rid of. They are attracted to the pumping of blood in a human system.
Location: Mostly on Death Deer but because they can transfer to other Darkness creatures as well as living creatures and humans it is hard to tell where they will populate.
Rarity: Found mostly on Death Deer but some creatures who have come across these deer may have an infestation making it very hard to determine how rare these are.
Notes: It will feel like a fire ant biting you at first. When they get under the skin they move around inside, just under the skin and not too deep. It hurts, and is one of the most annoying feelings I’ve ever experienced. When the sun comes up, the creatures disappear with the rest of the darkness. Once infected you MUST have a doctor treat you as soon as possible. If left untreated they can return at night and multiply. They can be given to other people and spread. If left untreated for too long, they will kill a person.

Devil’s Trap
AKA: Tiki Trap
Appearance: Exact appearance unknown. Reported to look like small worms in mud around bodies of water. Also reported to have a fishhead with many dark, root-like arms. Nothing has been confirmed, beyond that they tangle and pull people to the water.
Speed: Fast. Very fast. Get too close and like a frog’s tongue it whips out, wraps around you and pulls you into the water.
Traits/Powers: Unknown. Strong and tangling. Can pull the strongest human into the water and drown them. Muddy, very muddy habitats.
Location: Ponds, lakes, and the sewers. Found mostly in dirty or muddy shorelines. Never in the oceans or brackish waters.
Rarity: Not as common as Water Tikis, which it tends to live around. Can be found on its own on rare occasion.
Notes: See Water Tiki for more warning information when this creature is spotted.

Diggers
Appearance: Mole-like creatures with razor sharp 2 inch claws and beady black eyes. Hairless, black-skinned, sharp nosed, and with a long winding tail. Its body is covered in tiny rubbery nubs that wiggle and help propel it under the ground at alarming speeds.
Speed: Fast underground, but because of sight issues they can be a bit slow to move above ground.
Traits/Powers: Because of the fleshy nubs on its skin, it can move at fast speeds underground, and can sense the tremors and vibrations of beings through the ground. In large numbers the creatures can dig huge pot holes and sinkholes in most any soil, causing streets to fall underground at night. Thankfully this is always fixed by morning when the world goes back to normal again. The holes they create are part of the Darkness.
Location: All over the island, but mostly in the outlying districts and farm lands.
Rarity: Occasional but not rare.
Notes: These pests can actually get to the size for a small pony the 'older' they are, or get. It's unsure if the Darkness ever ages.

Flat Worm

AKA: Air worm, Tube worm, Mudfish
Appearance: Flat worm like creatures with catfish like whiskers and large mouths. Soft bodied they can take on the appearance of floating on the air when they move. They have no teeth. Long flat bodies are strong and able to wrap around its pray.
Speed: Extremely fast in water, otherwise they have a floppy but snake like movement on land. They move better in wet damp places like mud and puddles and such.
Traits/Powers: Attracted to powers, energy and blood. Their entire body seems to sense these three things. If the creature gets it’s large mouth attached to a humans body it will try to suck out the energy and power from that person. If left on long enough, not only will the person lose energy and gain fatigue but their control over their powers can be stunted or even removed for a few days time. The more power and energy they consume, the larger and stronger they get. As for blood, they seem attracted to it, and love to wallow in it.
Location: All over the city, mostly in wet places..
Rarity: Common.
Notes: It has taken some people up to a week to recover full use of powers again. There are no teeth and it doesn’t really hurt when these worms get hold of you. Think of it as a blood pressure pump wrapped around your upper arm. The sucking is uncomfortable. The loss of your power and energy is the dangerous part, however. If it weakens a person to the point that they can’t move, then that person is liable to be attacked and eaten by other creatures. It is soft and fleshy however, so they are fairly easy to cut apart.

Fuzz Puffs

AKA: Ankle Biters…
Appearance: A half a foot to a foot tall in size, resembling a rodent. It has one long rat’s tail, two thin front legs/arms, two large black shiny eyes and two long floppy ears. It looks like a rolling ball of fur. When its ears are down, it is safe. When its ears go up and its front arms come up, it gets a darker look in its eyes. The belly opens up to reveal a single large mouth with rows of small teeth.
Speed: When it rolls it can be very fast. It also has a surprisingly strong jump, and can leap a few feet through the air.
Traits/Powers: The power of adorable and cute? Though they look adorable, they are poisonous. One bite can make a person break out into a fever, sweats, and vomiting within 20 minutes. These symptoms tend to last a good 24 hours or longer. In some cases, weeks of illness and hospitalization have been recorded. They make cute chirping noises when they are docile, and sharp trills and growls when ready to attack. Secretes a very sweet smell of fruit and flowers.
Location: Inside abandoned buildings, alley ways and dark places of the city, like rats.
Rarity: Common
Notes: Seriously, they may look very cute and friendly,, but they are not nice creatures. Pick up and pet at your own risk. At the moment most hospitals in the city do NOT have a cure for the poison. If bitten do everything you can to clean the wound as soon as possible and try to keep swelling down. My personal opinion is to pick one up and throw it at another creature as a snack. Darkness creatures seem to find these critters tasty.

Gutter Roach
Appearance: One or two-foot roaches that live in cold, dark, damp places, which at night seems to be a lot of places. They have almost human-like faces attached to their small heads, wings that are black and slimy, and feelers that seem sharp and razor-like. They are durable; a foot stomp won't help much, hell, it might hurt you more than anything. The back shell is like hard shiny armor.
Speed: Average. They scurry pretty fast, but on an average they run about as fast as a normal human.
Traits/Powers: Gutter Roaches are not named because they live in gutters, but because they go for the guts of a being and devour their insides, essentially 'gutting' them in the process. If they get a long enough hold on a person they will jab their feelers into their flesh, burrow in and eat out the insides of a person. This will happen within 2 to 10 minutes. They can propel their large bodies through the air on wings but like normal roaches they can’t sustain airtime. They have sharp senses and 'hearing' and are easily alerted to 'danger' or approaching victims.
Location: Everywhere.
Rarity: Pretty common...like roaches...
Notes: Hard bitches to kill, but easy enough to get away from. They hate fire and light, and although a stomp of a foot does little, it does do something. Blunt weapons are useful but sharper tools make more sense.

Holy Slug

Appearance: Slugs, slugs, slugs. That's what these look like. Cute/gross little slugs. They can be anywhere from a half an inch to 3 feet or more in length. Slimy and leaving a greenish glowing 'snail trail' wherever they travel, these creatures seem to pulsate with a radioactive greenish color.
Speed: Extremely slow. Very...sluggish. (Sorry, I couldn't help myself, people.)
Traits/Powers: They have a corrosive power, eating through metal, wood, flesh, and other substances rather easily. Glass, sand, and concrete seem to be safe from their corrosive slime. It's untested but some say these little buggers are truly radioactive.
Location: All of the island with no one area more populated then the other.
Rarity: Tiny ones are common, but the ones reaching over a foot in size or more are exceptionally rare.
Notes: A reliable source has told that the famous Troll bounty hunter Non has been reported to use several of these slugs in thick glass jars for a soft light to hunt by at night, as well as a good torture device. Yuck...

Jack Cats
Appearance: Feline creatures with large hind legs and short front legs, generally overly skinny bordering on a bag of bones. These creatures have all their meat and muscle in their hind legs, resembling jackrabbit legs crossed with a house cat. When on all fours their hind end sits much higher than their large rounded head. They appear hairless with dark yellowish brown skin, or sometimes a pinkish brown colour.
Speed: Cat-like reflexes and speeds, but leap and jump much faster then even that.
Traits/Powers: There is no real power or purpose to these creatures. They can be found in any alley or street and are generally a pest if anything. A scratch from one could become easily infected though, and close to poisonous.
Location: Common beast found almost anywhere.
Rarity: Common pest.
Notes: Those who dare and those who have an affinity with cats might actually get close to these creatures. Some days, the Darkness remembers. If you happen to find yourself befriending one of these creatures at night there is a good chance it will remember you the next night. Sometimes it's interesting to have a Jack Cat show up; sometimes it's...a burden. Think twice before getting too close...

Memory Leeches
AKA: Memory Wipers, Amnesia Leeches
Appearance: They look much like a Power Leech, but without the shell and smaller in nature. More like a true bare-skinned leech in an iridescent, fleshy brown color. Sharp claws stick out from its body, like the power leech. The mouth is rounded and sucker like, attaching itself to the flesh of its victims. They will get no larger then 8 inches long. The smallest ones recorded were half an inch long.
Speed: Unlike the power leeches, the larger they are, the faster they move. The feelers and claws move in sync to propel the creature over any surface. The softer the surface, the faster they move.
Traits/Powers: Attaches to living beings by a suction cup mouth, clawed feet and tail. The mouth sucks down on flesh and leeches memories from a person. When attached to humans, the smaller ones can go unnoticed, taking just small fragments of memories here and there; larger ones will take entire days worth of memories, even identities away for weeks. Most are found at the base of a victims neck, the skull and hairline, or the spine.
Location: Throughout the city. Closer to human activity.
Rarity: Rare. The colder the night, the more one might find. They do well in winter. You hardly see them around at all on hot nights. They feed in cycles, so they aren't always easy to find.
Notes: While smaller ones will take away small memories (where did I park the car? What was I doing just now and maybe even 'what street is my house on?) latter ones have been known to take away full memories of childhood, parents, best friends, all friends, or even ones entire identity, earning the name of Amnesia leeches. So far ALL cases of attack and memory loss have returned back to normal after a recovery period, sometimes taking a few days, sometimes weeks.

Power Leeches

AKA: Suckers, Power Feeders, Leeches, Power Leeches
Appearance: They come in all sizes, from three inches to three feet around. Crawls on 12 tiny sharp legs with a long, swishing, barbed tail that sticks out from under its shell. There is a large tooth filled mouth under the shell. The underside is soft, squishy, has sucker cups and barbs on the underside of the tail
Speed: Depending on size and numbers, they can be fairly fast. The smaller they are, the more bug-like speeds they have, the larger they are, the slower they get because of weight. A human can outrun a large one.
Traits/Powers: Attaches to living beings by the teeth, mouth and tail. The tail digs in and suckers down, the teeth bite into the flesh and leaches from a person. They pull the power from living things. When attached to humans the smaller ones can go unnoticed, leaving a numbing feeling where they attach. Most are found at the base of the humans neck. They have also been known to chew on power lines to gain some form of power in the night.
Location: Throughout the city, mostly around buildings where a higher concentration of living beings and energy can be found.
Rarity: Not That Rare.
Notes: While the smaller ones aren’t as deadly, a person can feel drained of energy as well as unable to use their powers. The larger ones can drain a person of their powers and energy with in minutes and can leave a large enough hole in the body to leave a human dead within minutes. Smaller ones can go unnoticed for a full night, disappearing by day and leaving small teeth marks in a persons skin. It is said that powers will slowly come back to a person after they replenish their own energy.

Quelks

AKA: Lil Eyes, Glow bugs, etc
Appearance: Anywhere from one to three inches tall. Three grayish brown legs with sucker ends to help climb walls and smooth surfaces. In the middle of the three legs is one large eyeball, the iris has been reported to be any number of colors from blue, green, hazel, brown, red, yellow, purple and so on, while the pupil tends to be black or sometimes milky white. On the top of the eye, a long antenna hangs over and glows a soft light, generally white or yellowish in color.
Speed: Super slow! They walk slowly, taking each step carefully to make sure they are attached to surfaces first.
Traits/Powers: It’s a little eye on legs with a light. There isn’t much else to it. They live in massive groups on buildings and clumped together. It’s a bit of a guiding light in the darkness. Large groups of them can light up entire streets.
Location: Found in groups on buildings all over the city. Smooth surfaces and the corners of glass windows make great homes for them.
Rarity: Common.
Notes: HARMLESS. This creature is one of the harmless darkness monsters out there. Or at least to date it is. Research might prove otherwise.

Rust Crab
Appearance: A dark-eyed rusty looking creature. You will find a lot of these tiny craps hanging off of Bronzedust Cadavers and other such Darkness creatures. Their rusty metal armor backs have holes showing their soft fleshy innards. Their claws are large and quick to snap.
Speed: Normal crab speed, so nothing too bad to worry about.
Traits/Powers: Nothing, really. They're just a pest that lives on the bodies of other creatures as it can.
Location: Beaches, heavy in the 11th district, as well as the 5th and 7th.
Rarity: Not common but not rare either. Depending on the location they can be in abundance to the point of floods, or simply two or three on the body of something else.
Notes: Do not eat them. For the love of Jonova DO NOT EAT THEM. People, this is the Darkness, they're not edible. If only this warning had gone out sooner, Slow Tony might not be so dead.

Rat-tailed Pigeons
Appearance: Ever heard that pigeons are just like winged rats? The City's don't have wings anymore, and are like rats. Slimy greasy bodies with melted, tar-like, bloody nubs on their backs where wings should have been, beady eyes, and sharp beaks. These bird-like rats have long, thin rat tails to help them keep balanced, but still the normal bird-like features.
Speed: Fast at scurrying around and either hiding or attacking, but not fast enough to get out of your attack's way. Think rats and general pest's speeds at best.
Traits/Powers: Nothing. They are a pest. Their beaks are sharp and, if agitated, the creatures can cause a good wound in flesh, their bite is painful and sharp, but in general they are just gross pest creatures.
Location: All over the city.
Rarity: Common. Just...very common.
Notes: They really are like any normal city pests. Rats or pigeons. They act like both and are just as gross and annoying...maybe more.

Sharp Sighted Frogs

AKA: Multi-eyed Frog, Leapers
Appearance: Small, no bigger then a normal human hand. Paw like hind legs with frog gripping form legs. No head, but at the base of the back shell is a set of 100 or so eyes. Some are black to blue skinned and others are black with orange-red skin, both with a small spiked shell on its back.
Speed: Fast like a normal frog. From a standing start on flat ground, it can jump over 17 feet with a good strong force.
Traits/Powers: It’s body secrets a defensive poison like most forest frogs do. Black and Blue Leapers are the most deadly, with a poison that will cause a person to go into seizures on contact, foam at the mouth and pass out. Black and orange poison is less severe, causing nausea, fever and instantaneous vomiting.
Location: Everywhere.
Rarity: Common
Notes: I have heard of no cures for these yet, but laboratories are working on them. Both symptoms tend to work off after some time. It differs form person and problem. Those who pass out wake up in the morning fine however. As fine as a really bad hangover, that is.

Striders
Appearance: Odd creatures that have long spindly legs and huge striding steps. With tiny heads and fat bellies, it’s unsure what kind of creatures these once were, if any, but they could possibly have been the cattle, horses, or even some zoo animals from long ago. With yellowish translucent skin and no apparent 'weapon' like features, Striders are one of the most non-lethal creatures of the Darkness.
Speed: Slow moving at a casual step, but can 'gallop' at a fast speed because of the long strides they take.
Traits/Powers: They are not bothered by the other creatures of the Darkness, at all. In fact, when in herds they seem to be the safest from other violent Darkness creatures around. If you are fortunate enough at night to find a herd of Striders and can't make it home, stay within the herd as calmly as you can manage, and survival rate for the night goes up.
Location: These creatures tend to migrate all year round, moving from location to location and never staying in one spot for more than a day.
Rarity: Kind of rare. There are only two recorded 'herds' on the island consisting of 12 or so Striders with a few lost single creatures wandering on their own.
Notes: Try your hardest not to kill these creatures, but if you truly must, their hide brings big money on the black market. BUT, managing to keep the hide of a creature is extremely hard if not nearly impossible. It's said the hide makes good armor for the night to ward off other creatures, but this fact has never truly been tested and only rumored. Only those with cash to spend dare bother to attempt it.
