character relationships.

AMESTRIS | DEATH CITY RESIDENTS & SHIBUSEN FACULTY STAFF | FAMILY | THE WATCH | OTHER GUESTS

amestris ☈ fullmetal alchemist.

To say that Roy is relieved to see Armstrong again would be an understatement - the man had been an ally and friend to him upon his arrival in Death City, and his subsequent disappearance had shaken him badly. That this one's been taken from a different time and therefore hasn't been to Death City before is of little consequence: their initial conversations and Armstrong's willingness to assist him in Watch were more than enough to put Roy's fears to rest.

These guys fought a war together, and the Armstrong of Roy's world had his back to the very end. Nothing is going to change that.

It took a whole lot, but Roy finally decided to come out to Armstrong about... well, personal matters that he was originally content with leaving out in order to stay professional. He was expecting the worst in spite of everything, but it's clear that he shouldn't have worried at all. Armstrong is, perhaps, one of the most loyal men he's ever met indeed.

ALEX LOUIS ARMSTRONG, WEAPON ☇ CHAINED GAUNTLETS

Greed's arrival had caused quite a stir among the others, and with good cause - he was a Homunculus, and the Homunculi in both versions of Roy's world were evil. What was odd, however, was the fact that Greed shared Ling's face, and that some of the others from further into the future than the rest were willing to trust him. A quick investigation on Roy's end made things a little clearer, but didn't change his opinion. At the end of it, Greed was a potential threat.

...That was how it was, at least, until Roy realized that the two of them had a lot more in common than they thought. Also, what started as an agreement to exchange information and to team up in the event of King Bradley's arrival in Death City soon became an almost-friendship, one that involved a copious amount of drinking and interesting conversations.

Greed recently joined the Watch as what Roy suspects to be an attempt to find some new purpose for himself, and Roy was quietly looking forward to learning more about the other. The Homunculus, however, has recently been returned home. It looks like answers are going to have to wait, if they'll ever come at all.

GREED, MEISTER (★) (returned) ☇ SOUL SIEGE

It took one conversation with this Havoc to lay most of Roy's fears to rest - he's been around the group long enough to know that he's still welcome as their Colonel, even if their Amestrises may not exactly be alike. The moment Havoc offered to help out with the Watch and started putting in all the punchlines right on time, however, Roy knew that memories aside, there really wasn't a difference at all. He could still trust this one, and still rely on the man to watch his back.

Havoc recently hounded Roy when the latter tried to disappear for a day, following his fall out with Dojima - Roy ended up telling Havoc pretty much everything, if only because he was too damned tired and sad not to tell somebody he trusted. Suffice to say, Havoc's reaction surprised him.

Sometimes, he wonders what he did to deserve people who'll follow him to hell and back, and just take him for what he is.

JEAN HAVOC, WEAPON ☇ CARBINE RIFLE

In spite of her attempts at keeping a low profile, Roy had caught on to Lust's presence rather quickly over the network, and took to monitoring her from a distance, leading her to believe that he did not know who she was. He let the charade end, though, during one of Death City's celebratory balls. Now they're watching and waiting on each other.

Roy is pretty confident, however, that should Lust so much as lift a finger against his friends or anyone in Death City, he can take her down without problems. And he'll be very happy to do it too.

LUST, WEAPON ☇ SWITCHBLADE

Maes Hughes, the man Roy's been in love with since the very first day he saw him in the Academy. They were an item, back in the day - they fit together in a way that no two people can normally do, shared everything, went through everything, watched each other's backs. For Hughes, though, it was just one of those things. For Roy, it was everything.

Ishval destroyed Roy completely, leaving him reeling for something - someone - to anchor himself to. Hughes offered himself because he knew there WAS no other option, and left only when he was sure Roy would be okay. He had a girl to go back to and marry. Roy told him he was all right with it. What Hughes only realized later down the line, in all the painful little nothings between him and his best friend, was that while his feeling's had changed, Roy's remained exactly the same. He died before either of them could really resolve whatever it was that they had, but in a way? Maybe it was meant to be.

Fast forward to Death City and BREW's strange wish. Roy had seen it happen to others, and had hoped that it would not happen to him and the rest of his close associates in Death City. As with most things, however, Roy wasn't allowed to have what he wanted.

Hughes' arrival broke Roy almost beyond recovery, and while they've managed to get over some of the initial emotional stress and awkward, it's clear that the both of them are still dealing with one too many white elephants between them in Death City. This recent venture on Shibusen's part to leave Roy in charge of the security of the city could have provided the pair an opportunity to get better faster, but the war picked up, and a number of other personal storms kept both of them from really talking.

And now, Hughes is gone.

MAES HUGHES, MEISTER (★) {returned} ☇ SOUL TRUMP

Roy isn't about to tell Ran Fan this, but he had been... uncomfortable with her, at first. It was not her fault at all - she just reminded him a bit too much of Riza Hawkeye, which, of course, led to a very discomforting trajectory whenever Roy thought about it. When Ling disappeared, however, Roy felt as though it was only right for him to take responsibility for Ran Fan's safety and give her something to do. She's working with the Watch at the moment, and thankfully? It appears to be doing her some good. Roy, of course, plans on taking every opportunity that he can to keep her busy.

...But not TOO busy. She works way too hard, and she's stubborn as a mule.

Roy has recently discovered that Ran Fan's found a partner in Rise Kujikawa. He's hoping that that goes well.

RAN FAN, MEISTER (★) ☇ ITEM DETECTION

Riza was one of the two people whom Roy definitely didn't want to see in Death City, ever, and the hard truth of the matter is that he isn't sure if it's a good thing that this isn't his Riza or if it just makes things worse. It's... painful, really, coming across a familiar face, hearing that same voice say the exact same words that were thrown in your direction just a few months back, but knowing, ultimately, that this isn't the one that you actually need to sort things out with.

All of the events that took place a little before Riza's arrival and Hughes' own appearance crushed Roy, and Riza was the one, of course, who came to his rescue - the woman saw Roy in a state that even his OWN Riza hasn't really had to deal with, and Roy ended up reaching out to her on instinct. There may not be any consequences for this at the end of the day, but Roy can't help but be a little paranoid about the possibility.

While they were working on putting together Death City's Office for General Security, Roy opened up to Riza about the fact that he had actually stayed in his Lieutenant's house for six months in order to recover from his fight with Bradley and Archer's near-fatal bullet. They were... intimate then, and it was strange and frightening how close they actually became without ever really determining what they were. Roy, of course, ultimately left his Riza behind (for her own good? He'd like to think so), and he is pretty sure that his Lieutenant hasn't forgiven him for it. That this Riza remained resolute in trusting him and following him without judgment was unexpected, and a little difficult to swallow.

There are still other things, however, that Roy hasn't spoken to Riza about, and he is almost certain that there are things that she hasn't said to him either. He and his own Lieutenant are two halves of a whole, something beyond partners and comrades and friends and siblings - he has realized that it is the same for this Riza and her Colonel. And now they find themselves without their usual halves, but each other.

At this point, Roy feels as though they're hanging between something and nothing, unsure about how to proceed but unable to conquer their natural instinct to trust each other and rely on each other, for better or for worse. Working together in the Watch helps, of course, as does the fact that Roy can confide in Riza about his situation with Dojima, but some things are still strange.

RIZA HAWKEYE, WEAPON ☇ GEWERR KARABINER 98K

It had been hard already, having to deal with the fact that Edward Elric's childhood friend/Gracia Hughes' surrogate older daughter (and therefore someone whom Roy had to be more than just simply acquainted with on a regular basis) happened to also be the daughter of a husband and wife pair that you had to kill in cold blood, in spite of the fact that they saved your life once.

You can talk about orders, maybe wax poetry on things like honor and duty and a soldier's responsibility, but the fact remains: you shot them. They didn't fight back.

Roy has a whole lot of regrets, things that pushed him to do the things that he did, and Winry's a living embodiment of one of the biggest ones that he's ever had. And somehow, the fact that this isn't specifically the Winry that he's made peace with makes things worse. He knows that telling her would be the right thing to do, but he's not sure if he can even bring himself to have to admit it all over again.

Suffice to say, he's not the only one who's going to look out for her while they're in Death City. Taking lives means being responsible for the people who were left in their wake.

Roy and Winry were recently able to catch up after a long period of radio silence. She knows quite a bit about Roy and the nature of his relationship with Dojima by merit of the fact that she had to hand deliver notes from the future to the both of them, and Roy now knows a bit more about the girl and the sort of things she's been thinking about while they're in this world. It seems as though they're growing closer, bit by bit.

WINRY ROCKBELL, MEISTER (★) ☇ SOUL REPAIR

Roy has always viewed Alphonse as the voice of reason between him and Edward, and has quietly relied upon the boy to keep his brother in check and let Roy know if something was up. It's not a fool proof system - the Elric boys are tight, and have a habit of keeping things from adults, including Roy - but it worked, for the most part.

Seeing Alphonse in Death City immediately put Roy on the defensive: new world or no, alternate Amestris or no, Alphonse was still his responsibility, by merit of his age and his connection to Edward. Roy made sure to watch over Alphonse as much as he could while the other was in Death City, and was immediately worried about him when Edward vanished. True to Roy's fears, it wasn't very long before Alphonse ended up following his brother back home.

ALPHONSE ELRIC, MEISTER (★) ☇ SOUL ALCHEMY (Returned)

...Ah, yes. The boy whom he brought into the military. It hadn't meant much of anything before, really - he had been looking for the father, and had ended up finding the son with two limbs missing and a suit of cold armor for a younger brother. He had told himself that he was doing them a favor.

It became harder and harder to lie, really, especially after he had recovered enough to ask about the Elrics and received nothing but a stricken look and Riza Hawkeye - usually so eloquent - stumbling over his words and refusing to meet his gaze.

Roy had wrongfully drawn very strict lines between him and Edward, on the boy's initial arrival in Death City - he was an an Edward from another Amestris, with his own Roy Mustang whom he rants about and rails at and quite possibly trusts in some fucked up way. An Edward with the looks, the personality, the habits, but none of the experiences they've shared. A lot of things happened, however, and through them, Roy came to realize that the differences between the worlds that they know aren't so debilitating. Edward seems insistent, for one, on still calling him Colonel, and treated him as though they're from the same timeline.

Later on down the line, the two of them had more personal conversations, and through them, along with a good amount of fussing and action, Roy did his best to help Edward as much as he could. Still, there were times when Roy couldn't help but worry about the possibility that he might have failed to help Edward when it mattered the most. He wonders, in fact, if the boy was sent home because he was too crushed over Winry's disappearance to deal. If that was the case, then Roy's worst fears had come true.

It is not something Roy likes to think about.

EDWARD ELRIC, MEISTER (★) ☇ SOUL ALCHEMY (Returned)

Ling seemed trustworthy enough on the get-go, and it had certainly looks like he's better settled in Death City than most. Unsurprisingly, Roy ended up working rather closely with Ling while the Prince was present, as the two of them took to exchanging information and watching over the rest of their friends in Death City.

On another note, the Prince's reaction with regard to Greed's arrival had been... intriguing, to say that least. One could easily say that it was within the allowable parameters that anyone might have when faced with the revelation that they sell themselves out to something that's very clearly "evil" to them, but there was something else to Ling's reaction, in particular. Something darker, a little more obsessive.

Roy had fully intended on asking Ling about it at the soonest opportunity, but with the Prince's disappearance, he appears to have missed his chance. Now, however, he hopes that Ling will come back again for a very different reason: Ran Fan is still in Death City, and it would do her great good to be by her lord's side again.
