I've been off line for the last week. This month has been odd, with periods of busy and periods of quiet. So, much catching up to do on the meme. Behind a cut again, to save your flists.
20. What’s your favourite kind of bread? ( Read more... )
Personally I hate it that people have Americanised a lot of our language especially "It's real great" rather than "really great" etc..... it creeps into a lot of adverts which really (see what I did there?) annoys me.
Oh me too - 'off of...' really bugs me, and my current pet dislike is 'Take a knee' - where? Whose? Why? They are bending their knee and I don't see why reporters can't just say so.
'Take a knee' doesn't bother me because it's a version of 'Take a bow' and the only alternative I can think of is 'Go down on one knee'. Genuflect doesn't work, because that's a bobbing motion and kneel doesn't work because that's both knees. But one that does get me is 'gotten' in formal writing. And as I said to Kazzy (above) that is one of those ones that if you object to it, someone will come along to inform you that it was normal British usage until some point in the past and therefore you should not complain, which just annoys me more *g*
Oh yes - gotten annoys me greatly too - as S2C says we shipped all the people who used it in England off to 'the colonies' in the 17th century for using it...
I know. I am occasionally tempted and have to rehearse that pragmatic objection to myself whenever *g* We always had cats when I was a child and right up until I was in my late thirties, but now... No, I'm resisting the temptation.
Having an intellectual recognition that language evolves doesn't preclude you from getting grumpy about some things. That's what I tell myself anyway! *g*
