i'm planning on going to portland for new years. after a gazillion google searches on what there is to do in that yonder, fair city, i'm even more baffled than i was to begin with....so:

those of you who know anything about portland, or at all, please suggest things to do, good venues, etc.

thanks and thanks.

sam has friends that live close to there, and it's somewhere we'd both indpendently considered moving before. so we think it might be somewhere we could move together at some point. need to case the scene!

I would listen to nothing but Elliot Smith and read Blue Like Jazz for the next month to draw inspiration. Of course, go see Mt. St. Helens, Pioneer Square, etc. There is a lot of tasty local beers to consume at places like Horse Brass Pub. I have never been, but it is the one place left in the U.S. that I would love to go and live. I liken it to the Athens, Greece of our generation, quite stimulating.

Everything is wonderful in Portland.
1. I know it sounds weird, but the strip clubs in PDX are awesome
2. Downtown is ok, But Southeast and Northeast Portland are the best.
3. Powells book store in downtown is worth checking out
4.Businesses in PDX to go to: Rimskys (sp?) best little desert house, The Avalon a nickle arcade, The Albina Press best cup of coffee, Portland City Grill between the hours of 4pm and 6pm best happy hour food (but you have to buy a drink and they are expensive)

Oh I could go on but......Is there anything in particular you wan t to do?

I have a book/zine called "The Zinesters Guide to Portland" I would be glad to let you borrow (if I can find it). It has all of these ideas for things to do while you're there, things peeps like us would want to do. There's a vacuum cleaner museum! Can you believe that? There's a cool little restaurant in North Portland called "scramblers" I think and I had some pretty awesome pancakes there. The tri-met train is cheap and can pretty much take you to the edge of any part of town you need to go to. Just looking at the bridges is pretty amazing. AND if you have a bicycle, it's quite possibly the most bike-friendly big city I have ever seen. I rode from North Portland to the South-East side via bike lanes, with full traffic next to me, and never once felt like I was going to die.

I was cold in August though. I can't imagine what it's like in winter.
