I'm not sure what to say other than the fact that I've been an idiot lately, and I'm not getting any better. I felt like I had a lot of personal growth over this past semester. Now, I feel like I'm doubting myself a bit, but it's okay, there's hope for me, I suppose. I wish I was a better friend ( Read more... )

I've already offered my advice on the first paragraph, if that paragraph is what I think it is about.

And about the reading thing, I do the same exact thing. Like, when Harry Potter came out, I wasn't all too happy about, for this discussion, the look of Severus Snape. However, if you were to ask me why, I would simply say "He's not what I pictured him as." If you were to further ask me why, I wouldn't be able to give you an actual reason other than my first response. So we're two-for-two. Maybe our way of reading is the normal way of reading. Or we're just two loonies who happened to find each other. =D Haha.

that's how i read too! like, i couldn't tell you exactly who certain characters look like, but i could tell you who they don't look like. maybe that is just how everyone reads? or like nicole said, maybe we're all a little crazy and that's why we hang out and discuss these things. either way, i'm good with it.

sidenote: this is my reasoning behind not liking alan rickman as snape. he just didn't fit my semi-ambiguous character mold. like, i don't know exactly what he should look like, but that's not it. alan rickman is an excellent actor though.

i had to get used to all of the harry potter characters when i first saw them. gary oldman as sirius black was a lot different than i pictured him. i think it might be how everyone reads. in any event, i've started a new blog about teen fiction novels [well, it's really about any book i stick my nose into, but i tend to enjoy cheesy teen fiction lol]. i'm really excited about it though. what kinds of books do you like to read? i realized i'm not really sure.

i think i'm that way too. but as for harry potter [since that's what the other two were talking about], i tend to picture those characters as kind of cartoon-like since on the cover the characters were drawn. sometimes they're actual people, but they're very vague-looking. i don't know their facial or body features, just their hair color. and some characters i can picture as more detailed than others. it's not weird, i think everyone reads like this. especially if you read a lot, there are too many details and people to give them a complete picture.

yeah, i think you're right. you know, it's interesting that you mentioned you picturing the harry potter characters as cartoon-like. my friends and i really enjoy the twilight series [teen fic about a vampire and a normal girl that fall in love]. the books are being made into movies, and in any event, they began to cast people for the parts. anyway, my one friend revealed to us that she had trouble picturing the main vamp [edward] as a person, since she'd pictured him almost like a character from her favorite manga. that was actually the first time i'd heard of picturing things like drawings. i find that intriguing, though it's never really happened to me.

have you read anything good lately that you can suggest?

i've only read one book since hp7 and that was in august. i can't get over harry potter :\ but i can suggest plenty of books that are all my favorites:
the birth of venus by sarah dunant
middlesex by jeffrey eugenides
the lovely bones by alice sebold
the perks of being a wallflower by steven chbosky
she's come undone by wally lamb
the bell jar by sylvia plath
beakfast of champions by kurt vonnegut
brave new world by aldous huxley
invisible monsters, choke, diary, and survivor, all by chuck palahniuk

okay so that was a lot but if you pick any of those to read off that list i will guarantee you will love it. at least the first five, and invisible monsters. the others are all pretty fucked up and most people i've talked to didn't like the bell jar.
